Life & Work with Annie Johnson of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Johnson.

Hi Annie , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am currently a board member for the Mantorville Theatre Company which holds performances in the old Mantorville Opera House. This company has been up and running for over 50 years. Are “claim to fame” is always are Melodrama plays that we perform every summer. Several of these plays have been written by local playwrights who frequently also direct our shows. Additionally, we perform 3 full length shows throughout the year. These feature a spring comedy, a fall show (usually in the spirit of Halloween), and our Christmas production. Last year we performed another “Church Basement Ladies” production which is always a big hit.
I have been involved with MTC since right after COVID. I have had the privilege of performing in several productions, costuming, lights/sounds, and direct. I graduated with a BA in Theatrical Arts so this is my love. My favorite shows have been “Audrey” in LEADING LADIES and “Beverly” in CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES: THE LAST POTLUCK SUPPER.
I encourage anyone who is interested in getting involved in theatre to volunteer with this company. And of course, come see our shows!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always challenges with every organization. I feel one of the biggest ones is that the Opera House is an old building and continually needs repairs. Additionally, we have to be extra careful so we don’t damage the floors, or attract bugs with our food.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
MTC is most proud of the Melodramas. These allow the audience to boo and cheer with the characters. Additionally, these plays also allow the actors to break the fourth wall to get the audience to cheer louder. Overall, it’s just a fun time and always a fun script (and sometimes corny).
My favorite part of theatre in general is acting, choreographing, and directing. Therefore, I’m always willing to volunteer to make the company successful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Well, we just address the ghosts in the theatre and laugh when they cause tech issues.
