Life & Work with Blu of Dinkytown, Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blu.

Blu

Hi Blu, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my tattoo apprenticeship and career while living abroad in Switzerland. I moved back during the 2020 lockdowns and started tattooing full-time in Woodbury, Minnesota. I’ve been tattooing for 5 years and work out of Dinkytown Tattoo in Minneapolis. I enjoy tattooing many styles, although if I’m forced to name a few, they would be Neo-traditional, Geometric/Mandala, Traditional, Fine-line, and Mash-up styles. Tattooing is a 24-7 job, so I’m always designing custom tattoos for my clients, answering emails, and tattooing.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Minnesota has been a great place to work and live. After working and living for almost half a decade in Europe, I was nervous about starting a new career back in America. I was curious to know how the tattoo scene was in the Midwest, and most of my friends were back in Wisconsin, where I originally grew up. But it took some time to set up shop, make lifelong friends, and meet fantastic new clients I regularly see.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a very versatile tattoo artist. I design custom tattoos to ensure my clients have something unique for them. I also have much experience working with clients who get their first tattoos. I’m honest with my clients about what is tattooable and what won’t withstand the test of time. With that, I also work with them to get the best possible tattoo that will look good for their lives.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
This industry is changing faster and faster. I don’t see it slowing down; however, with the accessibility of tattoo machines online, I think some hard lessons will be learned over the next few years. The industry also exploded after COVID-19, and everyone seemed to want a tattoo or to become a tattoo artist. There will also be some settling in the industry as things return to normal.
