Life & Work with Candace Hensley of Willmar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Hensley

Hi Candace, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my photography journey around 15 to 16 years ago, driven by a deep love for capturing life’s simple moments after losing four parents and my cherished Nana, who had a great love for photography as well.

Having lived with bipolar disorder, now in remission for many years with several ups and downs along the way, I’ve gained a unique perspective and appreciation for life’s beauty and joy. Photography became not only a creative outlet but also a way for me to give back. I use my work to support various charities. I also help to raise awareness for mental health by collaborating with legislators and local groups to advocate for change and be a voice for those struggling with these issues.

Over the years, my photography has been featured in over 30 magazines, and I’ve been fortunate to receive numerous awards. However, my greatest passion remains giving back to my community and using my craft to make a positive impact.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve faced challenges, particularly with the stigma surrounding mental health, as well as navigating the competitive landscape of being a photographer in a town full of talented professionals. However, my unique perspective and dedication to kindness have set me apart. I believe it’s the small gestures and the effort I put into going above and beyond for my clients that have made the biggest difference. I have also helped mentor other photographers, and I’m always willing to lend to helping hand when photographers reach out and have questions or need help. That commitment has helped my business thrive, even through the ups and downs.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a photographer for over 15 years, specializing in senior portraits, weddings, and general portrait photography, with some experience in product photography as well. What truly sets me apart is my ability to capture the unique personality of each client to create meaningful, personalized images. Additionally, my work extends beyond photography—I’m deeply committed to giving back through charitable contributions and using my platform to advocate for mental health awareness. These passions are woven into everything I do, and they’re what I’m most proud of.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Photography is an ever-evolving industry, constantly changing with exciting new advancements. Technology, in particular, is playing a huge role in shaping the future of photography. The development of new gear and tools offers incredible potential for photographers to continue refining their craft and pushing creative boundaries. I see technology continuing to drive innovation, offering new opportunities for learning and growth over the next 5 to 10 years.
