Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Anderson.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started Building the Dream a few years ago after spending seventeen years working for a large corporate employer. I had always dreamed of building something of my own—something I could take pride in and one day pass down to my children. I never imagined that dream would truly come to life in the way it has.
Growing up, I spent countless hours alongside my dad, helping with projects around the house. That’s where my passion for building began. As life moved forward, I married my beautiful wife, we welcomed two wonderful children, and we moved into our own home. Naturally, I began taking on projects there—designing and renovating different spaces throughout the house.
Eventually, I decided to build a sauna in our basement. I fell in love with every part of the process—the design, the craftsmanship, and seeing the finished result come together. That project sparked something bigger. I realized I wanted to help other families bring their own dreams and ideas to life.
What began as small projects soon grew. A close friend asked me to build a sauna, and once again, I thoroughly enjoyed every step of the process. Word spread, and inquiries slowly began to come in.
Today, I truly love everything about building saunas. I enjoy collaborating with clients to create custom designs that reflect their unique needs and vision. Most of all, I’m grateful to wake up each day doing work I’m genuinely passionate about.
I would not be where I am today without the unwavering support of my wife, children, parents, family, and close friends who feel like family. They have been the backbone of this entire journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own company always comes with risks. I left a job that offered guaranteed work and steady income to build something from the ground up—and it hasn’t been easy. Over the years, there have been many moments when I’ve questioned the path I chose. In the beginning, I took on very small projects and relied heavily on client referrals to generate future work, not necessarily knowing what or when the next project was going to be.
Owning and operating a company comes with constant challenges. At any given time, I’m managing multiple responsibilities—marketing my services, handling sales calls, drafting estimates, ordering materials, scheduling projects, and completing the builds themselves. Along the way, hiccups are inevitable.
Through it all, I work to maintain a positive outlook by reminding myself why I chose this path and how much I truly enjoy the work I get to do every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design and build custom saunas for both homeowners and commercial spaces. I enjoy transforming underutilized or overlooked areas into beautiful, one-of-a-kind retreats. One of the things I love most about this work is that every sauna is completely unique—no two designs are ever the same.
I’m meticulous in my attention to detail and take great pride in my craftsmanship. I’m passionate about all things sauna and love sharing that passion with my clients. Working closely with them throughout the entire process is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. I’m helping bring their dream to life while continuing to build my own.
Within my small circle of trade groups, I’ve become known as “The Sauna Guy”—a title I’m proud to carry. I’m humbled that general contractors and professional designers not only trust me with their sauna projects but also refer my work to others. My hope is that every build continues to reflect the care and passion I put into what I do, because I truly love this craft.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is seeing my wife and kids smile. It’s knowing they’re happy and truly enjoying life. It’s waking up each day excited for what’s ahead. It’s finding balance and purpose in both work and family.
Above all, success is building—and living—a life I’m proud of.
