Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciena Yang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my nail journey toward the end of my sophomore year of high school. At the time, I had just quit dance and realized I wasn’t passionate about it anymore. I had always found myself watching nail videos late at night, completely fascinated by the process, especially the way a gel-x set comes together. It was like watching art in motion; so clean, so detailed, and honestly, kind of therapeutic.
Back then, I was working at a restaurant, saving up my checks with the goal of doing something meaningful with the money. Instead of spending it all on clothes or takeout (which I definitely still do sometimes), I bought my very first gel-x kit from Amazon. That kit changed everything.
At first, I practiced on myself and was surprised by how much patience I actually had—turns out, doing nails is way more calming than serving tables. Eventually, I started doing nails for my cousin and aunty, and while my sets took a little longer back then (okay… a lot longer), the time spent catching up with them made it special. We’d laugh, talk, and just bond and that’s when I realized doing nails wasn’t just a hobby, it was something that brought me joy and made other people feel good too.
So, I figured, why not share my work? I created an Instagram and TikTok account, and that’s how Nails by Ciena was born. It started with me taking a chance on something new, trusting my creativity, and going with the flow. Now, here I am, still learning, still growing, and still in love with what I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been easy. I think with anything you’re passionate about, especially when you’re building something from the ground up there is always going to be challenges and bumpy roads. For me, one of the first struggles was just being taken seriously. I started doing nails when I was only 15, and a lot of people automatically assume that someone so young can’t possibly be a “real” nail tech. I had to prove myself, not just to others, but sometimes to myself, too.
Building clientele was another big challenge. At the beginning, it was mostly just family and close friends. I had to really put myself out there, promote my work, and stay consistent, even on days when I didn’t get any bookings or felt like I wasn’t growing fast enough. Social media helped, but that also came with its own pressure. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of comparing your work to other nail techs who’ve been doing this for years or who seem to blow up overnight.
There were also emotional challenges. When you start a business, especially at a young age, you start to see people’s true colors. Not everyone supports you the way you expect them to. Some friends disappear, others act differently once you start succeeding. Learning to set boundaries and focus on my goals without letting the negativity get to me was a big part of my growth.
And then there’s the actual client work. As much as I love doing nails, I’ve had to learn how to communicate clearly, handle all kinds of personalities, and stay calm when things don’t go as planned.
Through all of it, though, I’ve learned so much not just about nails, but about business, people, and myself. The journey hasn’t been smooth, but every bump in the road has taught me something valuable.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a self-taught nail technician and the face behind Nails by Ciena. I specialize in gel-x extensions and freestyle nail art. I love creating clean, detailed sets that reflect my clients’ personalities, whether it’s something soft and minimal or bold and full of bling.
One thing I’ve noticed in the nail industry is that gel-x doesn’t always get the respect it deserves. A lot of people look down on it because it’s seen as “easier” compared to acrylics. But just because the process is simpler or less harsh on the nails doesn’t mean the quality is any less. Gel-x can last just as long as acrylics when applied correctly, and the nail art is just as beautiful. In fact, the smooth base makes designs pop even more. I’m proud to be part of a new generation of nail techs showing how versatile and long-lasting gel-x really is.
What I’m most proud of is starting my journey at just 15 years old. I saved up from working at a restaurant, bought my first kit off Amazon, and practiced nonstop on myself, my cousin, and my aunty. From there, I started posting my work online and slowly built my brand and clientele. Every set I do now reminds me how far I’ve come from where I started.
What sets me apart is my passion, consistency, and the way I connect with my clients. I don’t just want to give someone pretty nails—I want them to feel confident, comfortable, and excited every time they sit at my table. I take pride in the details, the experience, and the relationships I build with the people who support my work.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is building real connections with my clients. I don’t just see them as appointments, I see them as people I can bond with, laugh with, and grow with. Building that friendship and trust is important to me, because if I can’t connect with my clients, how can I expect to grow a meaningful business? At the same time, I always make sure to stay professional and respectful, because I want my clients to know that I take my work seriously and that I value both the relationship and the service I provide. It’s about finding that balance—being friendly, welcoming, and fun, while still showing up with the right mindset and work ethic every single time.
