Life & Work with Erica Ann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Ann.

Erica Ann

Hi Erica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My photography journey began when I became a mother. I bought my first digital camera when I was pregnant with my first child that is now 18. So, I guess you could say my photography journey or love for the craft began 18 years ago. I wanted to document her every move.

In the summer months, I found myself always photographing my kids, and in the winter months, I would hire a photographer, during those sessions I would always watch what he would do, how he would pose them, etc.

In 2010, I decided to buy a set of studio lights and started taking pictures of my son in my basement. I would often share these images on Facebook and get compliments about how great they are, and how I’m good at what I do. That inspired me to keep going. In 2012, I signed up for an online program through the New York Institute of Photography and that’s where my professional career began.

At first, it was a hobby, and then it slowly became a career after going through a divorce, being a single mom of three kids. I used my passion for photography to push me to get through what I went through and build a life for myself and my children. After 13 years, I can say that I have learned a lot, I have met and made many long-term relationships and have photographed thousands of people.

I have photographed a little bit of everything throughout the years but I can say my absolute favorite thing is photographing toddlers. They bring so much joy to my life with their innocence and free spirit about the world. I love capturing their souls because at that age they shine through naturally.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the obstacles that I’ve had to overcome with being in business and being self-employed have been a balance between work, home, and personal life.

With any business learning the business has had its challenges but like I said, I’ve learned a lot along the way and it’s been quite a journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer specializing in Newborn photography, toddlers, and family. I also do senior portraits, Headshots, boudoirs, and a few weddings. Some of my proudest moments throughout my career are having my images published in various magazines and making an impact in people’s lives.

In 2013, I did a photographic project surrounding awareness of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. This project was presented at local domestic abuse, crisis centers, colleges, and candlelight vigil. I’d say this was one of many proud moments in my career.

Some of the things that set me apart from other photographers are my ability to pay attention to detail, my creative eye, my skill in studio lighting, and high-key black and white.
