Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Rodelius.
Erick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed photography. I have done landscape photography, real estate photography, portrait photography, & most importantly now, auto photography. In 2019, I started going to car shows with my camera, to capture some great looking cars. It was simply another way for me to work on my photography hobby. Then 2020 and COVID hit, so I focused on my regular work and to stay healthy.
Last year, I decided to pick up my camera again & start attending cars shows. So I started Vintage Chrome Phitography. I scoured the internet for car shows in as many weekends of the year as I could attend. I also offered free photo sessions for local car owners so that I could build a portfolio on my Facebook & Instagram pages. Throughout the year I met many amazing people, & learned the histories & stories behind their cars.
I have been fortunate to be hired as the official photographer for some car events, & I continue to offer personal sessions for people who want to capture their classic car.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been relatively smooth, & that is because of one thing I have focused on. I am going to car show events for the fun. I am going to them for the enjoyment of doing photography, meeting people, & hearing their stories. I don’t focus on the business building aspects as much.
Right now, I want to let my work speak for itself, & try to build a following on social media. I take small steps to create a business model I’m happy with, & I don’t let it get in the way of why I started photographing classic cars in the first place.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I take photographs of the bygone eras of automotive history. I specifically enjoy vehicles from 1975 & older. Of course, the muscle car era will always be popular. I really enjoy finding the unique cars too; the hot rods, the pre-WWII vehicles, & those that you just don’t see everyday.
I enjoy capturing images of these cars that might be from a unique perspective, the close-up detail images of hood ornaments, badges, taillights, etc.
What I’m most proud of in my work is the appreciation I get from customers when they receive their images from me. They are delighted with how I am able to capture their classic in a way that others may not have thought of.
What sets me apart is I’m not afraid to share work I know not everyone will like. I stay true to what I enjoy, & I know there will be others out there who see my work and enjoy it as well.
How do you think about luck?
To put it bluntly, a lot of both. I have struggled mightily in the past, only for those struggles to open new doors for me, & lead me down paths I didn’t even know existed. I don’t look too far into the future. I tend to live my life one day at a time, & that has kept me from closing myself off from finding new things to experience.
Regrets & mistakes are just a part of life, but they have all led me to this photography adventure with Vintage Chrome Photography that I am really enjoying.
