Today we’d like to introduce you to Homunculus Rex
Hi Homunculus Rex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It began at a Psylo and Eat Lava show, where our good pal Mark Idstrom (Psylo, Berzica, Globlin) said that we would all be good pals and should make some tasty tunes. H-Rex formed as a last-ditch effort to create art we could be proud of in an environment that pushes us to be the best versions of ourselves. There is so much diversity in our musical influences, and each person in this group brings something new to the table that we can all build off of. We like to take our music seriously, but we don’t necessarily take ourselves seriously. Recognizing that as much as it is about furthering our own musical abilities, we primarily put our focus into the love and comradery we have for one another. All of our efforts have been leading up to our debut EP “Some Far Off Place” (COMING SO SOON). This has been so important to us as it is a culmination of our growth and efforts, both individually and as a unit. We wanted to create a cohesive body of work that bridges all of our musical interests and feels holistically new, and personal. The entire EP stems from this idea of a journey within the self, a transitional period of growth where the end goal is in sight.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
H-Rex is a product of patience. One of the most difficult aspects of any band trying to get their footing is balancing our home, personal, and work lives. If we could practice every day, we would, but that’s just not possible. We make time to practice twice a week and have been very consistent in that. Along with that, it’s so paramount to our success that we set aside preconceived notions about what makes a song “good” or “quality”. The collaborative efforts we have made didn’t come without sacrifice. In order to create any sort of cohesive works, there is an ebb and flow of ideas that need to be filtered, and sometimes that means putting ego to the side. Fortunately, we have created a safe space for honest discussions about what our individual goals are, and how they align with our team goals. H-Rex is more than a band, we are a family. It’s no easy task to be in a project that cares so much about what we create, but as long as we feed the drummer, there doesn’t seem to be anything that can stop us!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’ve been in the shed writing and refining material into what will now be our debut release “Some Far off Place.” The Homunculus mission has been to create a accessible soundscapes, but more importantly is exactly the kind of music we want to hear. It feels like we’ve accomplished that with the 6 songs we recorded at Carpet Booth studios last September. There are loads of licks and riffs, boundless basslines, tight n’ wonky rhythms, and heartfelt lyricism that is guaranteed to stick to the tip of your tongue.
