Life & Work with Jackie Hicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Hicks.

Hi Jackie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Jackie; I am the Owner & Maker of The Goodside Company. We are located 20 minutes north of Twin Cities. Simply put, I love quality candles. I love burning them, giving them as gifts, and now I love making them. I am a wife and a Mom of two girls. We enjoy hockey, gymnastics, and camping. I also have a love for the skin. I have worked in a Dermatology clinic as a Licensed Esthetician for the past 12 years, with the most incredible coworkers and patients. In December 2021, my mom was placed in hospice care. I turned in my resignation to help care for her and my family. To find something to help occupy my thoughts, I turned to our shared love of candles. I am human and insist on seeing the good in life. I strive to surround myself with uplifting people. I’ve learned that to get through tough times, I need to see the good in life and people. This is The Goodside Company.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like it’s been a fairly smooth road so far. Starting a business is definitely challenging. You are responsible for every aspect of the business; producing, marketing, product design, sales, taxes, cleaning, and still finding time to be present for your family and friends. The hardest part for me has been taking something I’ve created, and selling it to people. I’m confident in my ability to sell a product, but never have I had to do it for something I’ve been responsible for producing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By history, I’m a Licenced Esthetician, and I’ve worked at a well-known Dermatology Practice in Minneapolis for the past 8+ years. I’m most proud that I’ve had the opportunity to create these great connections with people from all walks of life, from coworkers to patients to my now wholesale clients and sports families. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so happy I’ve had all these supportive people. Everything is worth it when my daughters tell me that they are proud of me for “going for it.”

What sets us apart?
My mom was placed in the state’s only free hospice care facility; our family was incredibly grateful to them, so I’ve decided to donate a portion of our profits for the first year to their facility – which depends on donor support.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, it’s about producing a product that I’m proud of. Then seeing that product placed in people’s homes and businesses is really fulfilling.
