Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Mayer.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved baking. My friend and I would bake every time we got together, and dream of opening our own bakery. She has decided on a different career path, but it is one I have continued to pursue. I loved baking for my family and friends and would take classes to learn new skills whenever I could, whether at the local craft store or in school.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a cottage food producer, specializing in baking. I am known for the quality of my baked goods and take pride in making everything fresh and from scratch, which I think sets me apart from other bakers. The most popular products that I create and sell at events are my chocolate chip cookies and various flavors of scones; raspberry white chocolate seems to be the favorite.
I am most proud to have gotten my name and product out there to start making my dream a reality. It was a tough first step, and took a lot of courage, even though it was something I have always wanted to do. I’m so glad I took the leap!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
One of the pieces of advice I have received is to know your worth. This means accounting for your time when you are quoting a price to the customer and making sure you cost out the ingredients of the recipe accurately.
If someone turns you down, know that if you took those things into consideration and feel that that is what your time is worth, maybe they aren’t your ideal customer. Everyone has different tastes and budgets, and you aren’t going to fit into all of those, nor should you try. Your ideal customer base is out there, you just have to find it!
