Life & Work with Jolanta Young of Minneapolis -St Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jolanta Young

Hi Jolanta, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My entry into photography was entirely fortuitous. A marketing course at Metro State University required the creation of a business plan, and photography presented itself as an available option. Despite no prior professional aspirations in the field, I embraced the challenge. With limited resources, a camera became my primary tool.

While initial assumptions painted photography as straightforward, the reality proved far more nuanced. Mastering the craft demanded a dedication that surprised me. Yet, the challenges ignited a passion that continues to define my career. Photography transformed from a project into a pursuit I deeply cherish.

My early efforts involved establishing a home-based portrait studio. Experimentation with various techniques yielded positive results, even garnering recognition in the Headshot Crew contest. The year 2017 marked a significant turning point when I joined the Headshot Crew and forged a valuable friendship with its founder, Peter Hurley. The supportive and talented community I encountered proved invaluable.

Over time, my artistic approach matured, and my equipment naturally evolved. Despite these changes, the core of my passion remains constant: the desire to capture fleeting moments with artistic expression. I strive to maintain a versatility in my style, encompassing playful, romantic, and dramatic aesthetics. The beauty of photography lies in its lack of rigid constraints, allowing for boundless creative exploration.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path to professional photography presented its share of obstacles. The financial investment in equipment Improvisation with makeshift softboxes became commonplace until I could acquire the desired tools. Mastering editing software also demanded a significant investment of time. The emergence of AI autofocus features in contemporary Sony cameras highlights the constant evolution of technology. While these advancements offer convenience, I believe manual mode remains essential for best creative control.

Adaptability is paramount in the photography industry. Technological advancements occur at a rapid pace, and stagnation can lead to obsolescence. I actively explore the potential of new AI and generative tools, recognizing their potential for creative expression. However, I firmly believe that photographers with a distinct artistic vision will remain irreplaceable.

Beyond technical expertise, my artistic endeavors extend to bridging the gaps between different communities. A recent project involved capturing the essence of towns surrounding in Southern MN for a local vendor. The experience proved deeply enriching, fostering a connection with the region that continues.
