Life & Work with Jonah Beck of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonah Beck.

Hi Jonah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The love for music runs deep within Duck Bomb’s eventual birth, which led us all to pick up music in one shape or another, Gav (vocals/bass) and Jone (guitar/vocals) played together at church camp, while Jone and Josh (drums/vocals) met in the concert band while in middle school. We were asked to perform for a friend’s step dad’s birthday bash in 2021 when Josh joined the dynamic duo because neither of the other two knew someone who could play drums and was available! Weeks of rehearsals went by before the live debut passed, and that hard work paid off in being asked to perform again the following year! This single moment of wanting the trio back together sparked this project that evolved into something that neither of them could have imagined.

After two years of playing and writing together, figuring out how this band thing was going to work while Jone was figuring out if college was the right path for him (after way too long, he discovered it wasn’t), we were joined by the artist Crow on their debut EP ‘Bottom Text’ in January of 2023. The fan-favorite track ‘Make My Way Over’ was released in September of 2023, shortly before Jacob (guitar) joined the group to record ‘Smell the Fire’, another favorite of listeners! 2024 was a huge year for us, the first year that the we had decided we were good enough to subject the public to our art, the year that we realized that all those hours upon hours of focused rehearsals ironed the band out to be a well-oiled machine that only stops for water breaks!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to an independent artist/musician/band’s success is not one that has an ETA, it’s a road that takes research, acquaintances, and commitment. Much like homework, a job, or a career (go figure), we have all needed to wear the hats of musicians, performers, audience members, social media managers, audio engineers, very basic video editors, merchandise/sales managers and producers along the course of growing as people and as a business.

One of the bigger struggles was laid upon Jone, in 2023, he laid upon himself the chore of booking and finding shows for the band to play at. He had no experience in being a show promoter. Regardless of lack of knowledge and experience, he exceeded expectations by taking the time he needed to look for venues around town and other bands that needed slots filled. It took a high level of dedication and organization to keep everything straight, because after all, we were starting a career off of this kind of thing! Another struggle most group artists encounter is in the writing process, where a member or two may feel left out of the creative process. We trust each other’s musical taste and background to try something new or unconventional musically and to trust other members’ influence on the music we all make together. An honest shot is all it takes to see if a decision works, and if not, we try something else!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Duck Bomb is an alt-rock band from the Twin Cities that combines influences of pop, punk, hard rock and heavy metal (among others) to create a high energy modern alternative sound, or “good” if you don’t like labels! We have recently dipped into the dad rock genre, and we like it here! We’re known for driving music and having a rule that we play Free Bird whenever we hear someone in the crowd shout it out! Currently, we are most proud of each release after Bottom Text for adding something new, and getting the opportunity to play at Green Room, Utepils Brewery, and at the Minneapolis Parks and Rec Board’s Music in the Parks series! what sets Duck Bomb apart from other new rock bands is the way we combine pop, hard blues, and incorporating science into our sound, beating the stereotype that the Bass player is usually not the sharpest light bulb in the crayon box!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What we like best about the Twin Cities is that most of everybody is actively supportive of small businesses, artists and creatives included! We’ve found a few local organizations that are trying to resurrect the scene to what it used to be. It’s been great to find so many people who love this corner of the Cities as much as we have!

Something that could be improved about the cities, (and everywhere if we’re being transparent here) is the amount of impatient and impaired drivers that make un-smart decisions that cause damage and worse. Who knew there was a skill curve to driving in different weather conditions or around construction!
