Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Bowman.
Jules Bowman
Hi Jules, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Sure! I spent my adolescence in a small town in Northern Minnesota, where I found solace in my imagination and creating. As a young adult, I had started to dabble in custom murals before becoming a mother at 29, which shifted the time, energy, and space I had for art—which mostly took a backseat for many years.
When my son began driving, his new independence freed up my time to explore art in a more committed way. I rented a shared space in the Northrup King Building and began to accept commissions, collaborations, and produce whatever inspired me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think like most things in life, the artist’s journey is paved with plenty of twists and turns. But a ‘one foot in front of the other’ mentality has brought me to a place where I have a beautiful space in which to create and a belief in myself born of the obstacles I’ve overcome.
Shortly after renting my studio space at NKB, I carved out time to complete a 200-hour yoga teacher training and found a better sense of self by learning to be vulnerable—especially in my work as an artist. Now, sharing that work and vulnerability are a constant practice, as I create small pieces with affirmations for my yoga students to take with them after every class.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My works generally have an abstract quality and I’m maybe most recognized for my playful use of color, composition, and interdisciplinary talent. I’m a muralist, illustrator, and mixed-media artist, and so art flows out of me in so many different ways. I guess I specialize in not having a specialty.
I’m excited about a couple of upcoming collaborations, like my work with the Recess Factory/Nisswa Firecracker Run, for whom I’m designing an image for the July 2023 race t-shirts.
I’m also collaborating with Becoming Together, a new business focused on re-thinking mental healthcare in MN by developing programs that bring communities together in creative ways to explore emotional processing. We’re focused on helping build relationships and cultivating experiential mental wellness by expanding what people think of when they consider mental health care and shifting the language used to normalize emotional needs. Programs will include yoga, writing, social media, art, music, crafts, retreats—all within an equity model of pay-as-you-can, because we believe that reimagined mental health care must be open to everyone. I’m really looking forward to this expansion as an artist by helping others to better understand themselves while hopefully creating impactful connections.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid reminded me of the importance of authentic connections and the value of time spent with people who nourish, inspire, and bring warmth to your life.
