Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Fristedt.
Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From a young age, creativity has always been what fills my cup. It has been something I’ve naturally turned to throughout every stage of life; whether as an outlet, a way to connect with people, or simply something that brings me joy. Gifting has always felt like an extension of that. There’s something really special about creating something with a specific person in mind and knowing that even the smallest details can make someone feel seen and appreciated. When something comes naturally and you genuinely enjoy doing it, it doesn’t always feel like work.
My love for creativity led me into the world of interior design. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and found myself surrounded by an entire community of creative people. Being involved in the interior design industry has influenced BuyItBasketCase in more ways than I probably realized at first. I’ve been able to take things I learned in school and throughout my career: color, composition, presentation, attention to detail, and inspiration from other designers. Bring those elements into the way I create and present my gifts.
The idea of turning gifting into a business really started to take shape because I was already creating gifts for customers while working in the industry, as well as making personalized gifts for family and friends. It was something I genuinely enjoyed, and over time I started realizing that there could be something more there. What had always felt natural to me was also something that other people valued and appreciated.
Eventually, I decided to take the leap and turn that passion into BuyItBasketCase LLC. Starting a small business was definitely scary. But it has also been incredibly fulfilling. I get to combine creativity, gifting, design, and helping people celebrate the people in their lives, which makes the work feel very personal to me.
I’m still growing and learning as a small business owner, but I think that’s part of what makes this chapter so exciting. BuyItBasketCase continues to evolve as I do, and I’m really proud that something that started so naturally, simply by creating thoughtful gifts for the people around me, has grown into a business of my own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. The creative side of BuyItBasketCase has always felt very natural to me, but learning how to actually run and grow a small business has been a completely different experience.
When the idea for the business first started, a big part of it was simply about doing something creative that helped boost my mental well-being. Creating gave me something positive to focus on, and gifting gave that creativity a purpose because I was able to turn it into something that could also make someone else feel good.
As the idea grew into an actual business, I quickly realized that you’re not just creating the product. You’re also learning marketing, social media, pricing, branding, customer communication, organization, and all of the behind-the-scenes pieces that people don’t necessarily see. There have definitely been moments where I’ve had to step outside of my comfort zone and learn as I go.
Another challenge has been trusting myself and having confidence in what I’m building. Taking something that started as a creative outlet and putting a business name, price and brand behind it can feel very vulnerable. You’re essentially asking other people to see the value in something that is very personal to you.
I’ve also had to learn that growth doesn’t always happen as quickly or as perfectly as you picture it in your head. As a creative person, I can have a million ideas at once, but there are only so many hours in a day. Learning to prioritize, be patient with the process, and allow the business to evolve has been an important part of the journey.
At the same time, I think those challenges have made the successes feel even more rewarding. Every order, returning customer, referral, or person who tells me they loved a gift reminds me why I took the leap in the first place. I’m still learning, and I don’t think that ever really stops when you own a small business, but I’ve learned to see that as part of the excitement rather than something I need to have completely figured out.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My professional life has always centered around creativity, design, and helping people. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and have spent more than a decade working within the interior design industry. That experience has shaped the way I look at color, composition, balance, presentation, and even the smallest details. All of which naturally carry over into the work I do with BuyItBasketCase.
With BuyItBasketCase, I specialize in creating personalized gifts that are thoughtfully put together around the individual receiving them. I never want a gift to feel generic or like something that was simply pulled off a shelf. I really enjoy learning a little about the person: their interests, personality, favorite things, the occasion, or even an inside joke, and then turning those details into something that feels intentional and personal.
I think one of the things that sets my work apart is my design background. I approach a gift basket much like I would approach a design project. I think about color, texture, scale, placement, presentation, and how everything works together visually. But beyond how it looks, I also think about the experience of receiving it. I want the person opening it to feel like someone truly thought about them.
I’m probably most proud of the fact that I took something that initially brought me joy and helped support my own well-being and turned it into something that can create joy for other people as well. There is something incredibly rewarding about hearing that someone loved their gift, or having a customer come back because they trusted me to create something meaningful for another important moment in their life.
I’m also proud that BuyItBasketCase allows me to bring together different parts of my professional and creative life. My interior design background taught me how powerful thoughtful details can be, and this business gives me another way to use those skills. Whether I’m creating something for a birthday, holiday, celebration, corporate thank-you, or simply a “thinking of you” moment, my goal is always the same: to make gifting feel personal, thoughtful, and a little easier for the person giving it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck has played an interesting role in both my life and my business, although I’m not sure I’ve always recognized it as luck in the moment.
I’ve been very fortunate to have spent my professional career surrounded by creative people. Working in the interior design industry introduced me to so many different personalities, ideas, products, and ways of looking at design. Some of those relationships also became part of the very beginning of BuyItBasketCase, because I was already creating gifts for customers, coworkers, family, and friends before I ever thought of putting a business name behind it. Looking back, being surrounded by that creative community was a really fortunate place for this idea to begin.
I also think there is a certain amount of luck in the people who cross your path at the right time. A compliment, referral, returning customer, word of encouragement, or unexpected opportunity can give you the little push you need to keep going. As a small business owner, those moments mean a lot, especially when you’re still figuring things out and wondering whether what you’re building will resonate with other people.
On the other side, some of the things I might have considered “bad luck” at the time have ultimately pushed me toward growth. Life doesn’t always go according to the plan you’ve created for yourself, and I’ve learned that a change in direction can sometimes create room for something you wouldn’t have pursued otherwise. Creativity and BuyItBasketCase have given me something positive to pour myself into during some of those times.
I don’t think luck replaces hard work, though. An opportunity can land in front of you, but you still have to decide what you’re going to do with it. I feel very lucky for the people, experiences, and opportunities that have helped BuyItBasketCase grow, but I’m also proud that I took the chance on myself when I could have easily talked myself out of it.
And maybe the best kind of luck is when someone discovers something you created and connects with it. Those moments still surprise me, and they make me excited to see where this business continues to go.
