Life & Work with Kaci Mohagen of Duluth/Superior

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaci Mohagen.

Hi Kaci, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
After graduating from UMD with a business degree, I found a clerical job at a local clinic. I worked there for a few years, and during that time, I discovered my love and passion for photography. I started by photographing the wedding of a family friend. I quickly learned how much I loved documenting special moments. I felt fortunate to have such a supportive client base and local community! I was able to go full-time in 2019, though 2020 did prove to be a difficult year as a small business.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As you’d expect, there have been rough patches with any new venture. One of the hardest parts for me was navigating the pandemic as a small business. At some points along the way, it felt scary, but I was luckily able to push through. Last year we welcomed our baby daughter, so I also have been learning all about finding work-life balance as a mom and business owner!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in weddings, families, and senior photography in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I started shooting weddings in 2018 and quickly found them to be one of my favorite things to photograph! I love capturing these happy memories and providing my clients with a way to reflect on them for years. I’m most proud that years ago, I leaped into entrepreneurship even when the future of my business was unknown. I feel fortunate about where I am today as a small business owner and appreciate all the support I’ve received along the way.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I moved to Duluth from the suburbs of Minneapolis in 2012. I quickly found Duluth to be such a unique area and fell in love with it! I’ve been lucky to be able to visit many beautiful locations in Duluth and the north shore while I’m shooting! What I love most is the sense of community in the area and our closeness to nature.
