Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Katrina Dillard.
Hi Chris and Katrina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are Chris and Katrina Dillard owners of Dishes by Ka’Ris. We’ve always dreamed of owning our own business and being entrepreneurs, we are a blended family and combined have 8 children and 1 Grandson, so our goal was to begin to create Generational wealth and a legacy for our children. Something that could be passed down to our children and children’s children.
My husband has always been my biggest fan and supporter especially when it comes to my cooking. In March of 2020 due to the pandemic I was laid off from my management job. Chris encouraged me to start selling plates and explore catering. So I did, we started out trying different items from soul food items to chicken and waffles. Then Birria Tacos went viral on social media, they looked amazing! I got a YouTube video link from a friend and started selling Birria Taco plates and Family Platters, for almost a year and half every Tuesday and Friday. We’ve created a loyal customer base and decided it was time to make this dream a reality. In July we toured a “ghost kitchen” and signed a lease that day.
November 2nd, 2021 we officially opened at the Currie Food Hall Downtown Minneapolis. We offer pick up as well as delivery on all the major delivery apps; Doordash, UberEats and Grubhub. We pride ourselves on being Owner Operated and preparing our food with love!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an up and down battle. Starting a business definitely takes a financial, mental, and stressful toll on anybody. Then in September our family tested positive for Covid. It delayed our Grand Opening by a month, but we have a great support system and village that has supported us throughout our entire journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are the Home of Birria Everything. It all started by watching a YouTube video on how to make Birria Tacos to creating an entire Birria Inspired Menu. We offer everything from Birria Tacos to Birria Fries, Birra Grilled Cheese and a Birria Loaded Baked Potato. I guess you could call me a YouTube chef as I don’t have any official culinary teaching, my background is Business Management and Customer Service which I think gives me an advantage when dealing with my customers. Chris previously worked as a Youth Counselor. We make an effort to ensure our customers are happy with not only their food but our service as well. We also think the fact that we are a Husband & Wife unit working together definitely sets us apart from many other establishments. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy one another and working together. We make a great team and have created something really special together.
