Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Eidem. Lacey shares her story with us below:
Lacey received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting from the University of South Dakota in 2008. She has worked as a professional artist exhibiting her work in the region. In the summer of 2011, Lacey completed the teaching certification program at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. She taught elementary art for several years in the Mitchell School District before taking a step back from teaching to pursue a full-time career as a painter. In the Summer of 2022, Lacey, her husband Evan, and two boys, Johnny and Oscar, moved to Sartell, MN. Lacey continues to paint professionally and exhibit her work across the Midwest.
There have been many highs and lows in my life and career. In 2008 I had my first child, graduated college, and had extensive life-changing spine surgery. That year, in comparison, makes any challenge seem like a breeze. Raising children in this era of social media has also proved to be very challenging. Regarding my career, I have found what works and what doesn’t. I wish I could spend all day long just painting, but there’s so much more that goes into being an entrepreneur.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Artist statement: Each person depicted in this portrait is a purposely chosen personality that I find intriguing. Many are creatively divergent from the mainstream. I practice in a very deliberate painterly way in depicting each of these people in a disorderly manner frequently with my fingers. I use watercolor in a non-traditional style that is heavy and plentiful. In between my portraits, I take time to be more playful and less deliberate in my work. I take more risks and use as much color as humanly possible. I have a solid, consistent theme of what it is to be female.
Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share? We’re always looking for lessons we can learn in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis.
