Life & Work with Lilliana Olson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lilliana Olson.

Lilliana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My parents always encouraged me to follow my passions. When I decided to forego college, they were in my corner every step of the way as I pursued the things that I wanted to do. I’ve always loved pouring my heart into things that make people happy, and I’ve found that passion with photography!

When I took two photography classes in high school, I fell in love with film development and the digital editing processes. Now balancing a full-time job at Caribou Coffee, directing middle school theatre in the winter, and photography on the weekends, my life is full to the brim and I couldn’t be happier.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. There has been a huge struggle with impostor syndrome in everything I do. “Why did they choose me? I can’t do this.”

I remember sometimes just sitting in my room and feeling like such a sham, a fake, and I couldn’t get out of it. It’s just taking a step back and centering yourself, feeling confident in what you do, and realizing that people pick you for a reason.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I’m not serving coffee, I’m a part-time photographer and theatre director. I wouldn’t call myself “professional” by any means. I’m just very lucky to get to do what I love.

From November-February, I direct the musical that is put on by a middle school in Lakeville. 5 days a week I’m there with two other strong, inspiring women as we work to put on a show that has people saying “Wow! I didn’t know a middle school could do this!”

I also do photography! Mainly senior portraits and engagement photoshoots, but I have done a few weddings. Senior portraits are by far my favorite pictures to take. Making sure they feel comfortable, and really building a relationship with them are two of the pillars of what I do. Always being open for communication no matter what people need, and making sure that the photos they get are exactly what they want.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s okay to ask for support. It’s okay to ask questions. If you don’t know something, chances are there is someone out there willing to help and support you no matter what.
