Life & Work with Lindsey Bomgren of Plymouth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Bomgren.

Hi Lindsey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I launched nourishmovelove.com back in 2015, my original plan was pretty simple: sell a workout program and a set of DVDs I had created (back when DVDs were still a thing!). But as I got more involved in the online space, I noticed recipe creators and food bloggers were sharing free content—and still building successful, monetized businesses. That really opened my eyes. I started digging into how I could apply that same model to fitness.

In those early days, I wore a lot of hats. I was a personal trainer, fitness model, freelance writer, even doing meal prep for clients just to break even. But I kept showing up and sharing free workouts online, and slowly but surely, my audience grew.

Now, 10 years later, we are able to share free fitness content and at home workouts as a sustainable and growing business model. I have four amazing, full-time employees helping me run the business. We’re able to support the company through ad revenue on our website, a paid YouTube membership channel, brand partnerships, and affiliate marketing.

It’s been a long road, and we’ve had to learn (and unlearn!) a lot along the way, but I’m so glad we stuck with it. My mission is (and always has been) to help busy women and moms stay consistent with their workouts so they can feel strong, energized, and be the best version of themselves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The online space is constantly changing, and it feels like we’re shifting our business model every year, sometimes every quarter to keep up. We’re pretty much at the mercy of Google, since it’s our number one source of traffic. So when they roll out a core update (which happens often), we have to pivot and adapt right along with it.

That might mean reworking our website layout, tweaking how we write and optimize for SEO, or diving into entirely new platforms, like Google Web Stories Reddit and ChatGPT. We’re constantly learning, evolving, and trying to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to content creation trends.

From the outside, it might look like we just shoot a workout video and hit publish, but there’s so much more happening behind the scenes. Every single video and blog post represents at least a week’s worth of work. Before we even film, we create a 14-page planning doc that outlines the SEO strategy and how we’ll frame the workout, with the goal of landing on the first page of Google. It’s a ton of work, but it’s also what makes this business run.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In short, we work really hard to create high-quality workout videos that show up on the first page of Google search. As a small but mighty team of five, we do it all. From scripting workouts and showing up on set, to managing filming, lighting, audio, editing, copywriting, SEO strategy, graphic design, and social media. It’s a full production.

One of the things I’m most proud of over the past ten years is the impact we’ve made beyond fitness. We’ve partnered with incredible organizations like Healing Waters International to fully fund two clean water sites in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. And we’ve had the opportunity to partner with Emerge Mother’s Academy here in the Twin Cities to help provide vehicles and vehicle repairs for single moms here in Minnesota.

We’ve also had the opportunity to partner with organizations like Medtronic to promote the importance of heart health for women — something I’m really passionate about!

The thing that most sets us apart is that we share 100% free content. The only paid subscription we have is our $5.99/month YouTube Membership which gives our community greater support and accountability. It’s a really solid community and members can join for less than a fancy cup of coffee! I’m proud that we’ve found a way to bridge both the YouTube and blogging worlds. While most fitness creators stick to video, we’ve invested heavily in SEO, which puts us in direct competition with major publishers like Women’s Health and SELF Magazine which is pretty exciting!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband Tim deserves a huge shoutout — he supported our family while I was trying to get NML off the ground for several years and he always believed in me (even when I lost faith).

My dear friend, Stacie Hassing (of The Real Food Dietitians) and I quit our corporate jobs at the same time about 10 years ago. If it wasn’t for the support of Stacie and pursing the unknown online space together I certainly would’ve quit. She has seen Nourish Move Love through every stage of success and pivot. She’s someone I trust and can count on for encouragement and advice.

And Lee Hersh from Fit Foodie Finds has been a huge mentor to me — freely sharing her revenue and analytics with me to help me level set projections and timelines.

I also rely heavily on my local Business Women’s Circle (https://www.thebwc.org/) and my WPO Chapter, Chapter 4 (https://www.women-presidents.com/).

Additionally, I have a core group of friends from my college volleyball community who are fellow entrepreneurs and mothers and we meet monthly to support each others endeavors.

My parents and in-laws, who help support Tim and I by watching our kids during busy work weeks, sick days and business travel.

We have such a solid support system, I’m so grateful for them all!!
