Life & Work with Lindsey Trossen of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Trossen.

Hi Lindsey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my start with $15,000 of student loan money and a dream. My opportunity arose when the company I worked and managed for decided to close in 2011. The initial plan was to take over the existing month to month lease in what was Block E (now Mayo Clinic Square). The landlord declined to do this, so I looked for other options and found a place at 811 LaSalle in the skyway. I was able to purchase the equipment, software, clients and hotel relationships from the company I worked for which jump started my business at 811 LaSalle. Despite many trials I was able to remodel the space and make it my own. It did not yet have the pianche of the previous business, but it felt warm and cozy. We built a team culture that was fun, fresh and full of eagerness and opportunity and developed our brand on friendliness and precision. Our team say many things and experienced changes over the years including an eventual remodel. We survived recession and pandemic. In doing so we found our niche as a true SPA and reduced the amount of hair business in order to have a more cohesive environment.
One of the keys to success has been being an owner operated small business. In doing so we are able to shift staffing, appointment availability and sometimes price points to support the needs of our guests. We are known for our friendly team, our ability to accommodating the needs of our guests and for our providing stellar services with great attention to detail.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road of business in downtown has not been an easy one. Myself as well as many other business owners have struggled through changes in Minneapolis and downtown itself. Remote work has impacted the day to day business, however the city has done a great job of bringing events to downtown that positively impact our destination business. We have had other issues with remodeling and building out of our spaces that greatly impacted us. Women Venture stepped up with funding for our 2016 remodel of the space at 811. They also provided help with financial accounting and mentorship. We were eventually able to get past some construction/repair problems and create a space that is comfortable, inclusive and well thought out.
When we chose to relocate to Gaviidea, we were once again faced with construction issues. We made it out with a little help from our friends. Other downtown business owners helped get us referrals and repairs that were needed.
There were also some very clear changes in staff mentality and hiring. When I came into the into the industry we were paid nothing and expected to do a lot. Getting support from coaching businesses like Summit Salon Systems and Business Women’s Circle and finding team members who both want to travel to downtown every day and align with our passion. We are fortunate to say that we have learned a lot about hiring and management. Our current team is a product of dedicated professionals who match our passion and purpose here at Emerald City.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a cosmetologist and massage therapist by trade. I started my career in hair and took other services to help get me busy. I have trained and worked all over the twin cities in various types of businesses. I found that I am most comfortable working in high end facilities where down to earth people flock. This is how I found my home downtown. Being from a middle class blue collar family, I believe I am able to provide an upscale, yet inclusive experience that translates well to people of all walks of life. I am most proud of my team and the fact that I am able to pro\vide them with a place to be passionate about work that also allows them to earn a living wage.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is making others feel good. To bring joy to someone’s day, give them confidence, inclusion and support fills my cup of joy. I learned several years ago that I am at my best when I am making others better.
