Life & Work with Lisa Lux

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Lux.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Oh, thank you for asking! My journey as an artist has been an incredible adventure, with twists and turns that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Virginia and later moved to Atlanta, where I began exploring my artistic passions. It was in Minneapolis, Minnesota, though, that I truly found a place to call home—a city that resonates with my values and experiences as a strong, feminist trans woman.

I’ve always been drawn to various art styles, like impressionism, expressionism, art deco, and mid-century modern. Over time, I realized that I had a deep connection with capturing the spirit of urban life and the diverse people who bring it to life. As an artist, I believe that my work is a bridge between the subject, the viewer, and myself, creating meaningful connections and sparking conversations.

Throughout my 20-year journey in digital graphic arts, design, and illustration, I’ve grown to love photography as well. It’s a beautiful way to capture the wisdom and beauty hidden within life’s fleeting moments. My artistic approach is grounded in practicality and logic, but I also embrace the expressive and emotional aspects of art.

Adobe products have been my go-to tools for digital art, but I’m always open to exploring new mediums and perspectives. I think it’s important for an artist to evolve and stay curious, so I never shy away from experimenting and learning new techniques.

Social media has been a fantastic platform for sharing my art and connecting with others who appreciate the power of artistic expression. My work not only showcases my personal journey but also serves as a means for others to communicate their emotions in ways that transcend the spoken word.

I’ve taken on commissioned projects over the years, which I find fascinating because they allow me to step into someone else’s world and expand my artistic horizons. Ultimately, I hope to leave behind a legacy that offers future generations insight into the diverse tapestry of human experiences and emotions.

So, that’s a bit about me and how I’ve evolved as an artist. I’m grateful for the journey so far, and I’m excited to see where my artistic path leads me in the future.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path of my artistic journey has been anything but smooth. The art world can sometimes be unwelcoming, with ongoing debates about what qualifies as art and what doesn’t. To me, art is the expression of emotions and the embodiment of our passions. It enables us to share an emotional or thrilling experience with others and encapsulate a particular moment in our lives. Art can even assist us in comprehending our own emotions when they’re not immediately clear.

Regrettably, disagreements can arise within the art community over the mediums artists choose. My art is digital, which means it doesn’t have a single physical origin or record. Yet, I find this medium empowering, as it allows my artworks to be reproduced in various forms, including paper, canvas, acrylic, metallic, and prints of different sizes. I often use Adobe products and AI to create my pieces, refining and perfecting them. However, this has sparked debates about whether digital art created with tools like Photoshop or AI constitutes “real” art, which can be disheartening.

As someone who was not born female and identifies as non-binary, I’m no stranger to the struggles of feeling marginalized and not fitting in. Ignorance can give rise to fear, contempt, hatred, prejudice, and resentment, making it essential to resist these negative mindsets. Embracing my identity as a non-binary artist has taught me resilience and the importance of not letting others’ opinions impact my work. This message is more relevant now than ever before.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Thank you for your interest! As a professional artist based in Minneapolis, my creative passions revolve around impressionist, expressionist, art deco, and mid-century modern art styles. I’m deeply inspired by the city’s unique spirit and the diverse inhabitants who make it a vibrant place to live. My
primary medium is digital paintings, and I skillfully employ AI where it complements and enhances my artistic vision.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What do I love most about our city? Minneapolis embodies a sense of liberation and self-expression that I deeply cherish. The diverse and welcoming community fosters an environment where creativity can flourish. Additionally, when spring finally arrives, it breathes new life into the city, filling it with vibrant colors and energy.

As for what I like least, it’s the snow. As a native Minnesotan, I understand the love-hate relationship we have with our winters. Right now, as I write this, I can see the snow falling outside. While the snow can be beautiful and create picturesque landscapes, it also comes with its challenges, like harsh driving conditions and the constant need to bundle up against the cold.

However, I believe that living through these long, cold winters has made us Minnesotans resilient and able to find joy even in the harshest conditions. We come together as a community to celebrate the beauty of our surroundings and the warmth of our shared experiences, which ultimately makes our city an even more special place to call home.
