Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Moy.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my radio career in September 2009 at 89.9 KMOJ as a morning show cohost. I had no broadcasting experience. I actually got hired on the spot with no intentions of being on the radio. I’m not from the twin cities I’m originally from Philadelphia and was raised in Chicago. I moved to the twin cities in 2004 and knew that KMOJ was active in the community so I went to be a volunteer and when I went they thought I was coming to pick up tickets to an event. When I told them what I was there for the General Manager brought me back into his office and we talked for about an hour or so and he asked me if I wanted to be a radio personality and I was like uhhh yes!!! Lol! I was so nervous but knew I couldn’t say no, especially to an opportunity like that! With training, radio started to become a passion and I was blessed to work with some of the most talented people in the Twin Cities. I was offered my own morning show titled after my last name MOY. “MOY”Ning show. I then moved to middays until I moved on from KMOJ after 7 years. Then after almost a year of not being on the radio, I missed it, the audience, the people, and then I sought after Go95.3 and was hired as a weekend personality. It was awesome to experience two huge radio stations in the twin cities. Both are completely different! I had always loved listening to Peter Parker not only from him being on-air locally but I heard him on air in his home town Boston and was like I’m going to work with him one day. So it really was a dream come true when I was hired by him and the General Manager at GO. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, the station was sold. As far as radio goes, I’m always grateful for the opportunities it presented me as well as all the other doors it opened. Currently, I’m an in-arena host for the MN Lynx!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would be remiss not to mention the challenges that I’ve faced in my career. From being new and learning and wanting to be a pro right away to criticism from upper management regarding the sound of my voice. Political inner works and navigating in a male-dominated industry. Self-confidence wavering, overcoming anxiety, social anxiety, and stage fright. Competitive co-workers, jealousy, colorism so many obstacles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I’m an in-arena host for the Lynx. I specialize in entertaining people with my voice and personality. I’m known for being a radio personality for 11 years in the Twin Cities. I’m most proud of having a morning show being named after me as well as being the first black female in-arena host for the MN Lynx. I believe my background and living/moving to different states has added so much diversity in the way I see things and people. I’m always myself and I think that sets me apart.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My favorite book is the one I’m currently in the process of publishing right now. It’s called November and will be released this year. I enjoy listening to Sarah Jakes Robert’s “women evolve” podcast and Joyce Meyers “enjoying everyday life” podcast. I love following positive helpful and also comical accounts on Instagram I like “Earn your leisure”, “The breakfast club” “Jess Hilarious”. I would say Instagram is my favorite social media app.
The main resource that helps me do my best in life and my career is absolutely my relationship with God. My faith has helped me every single day of my life.
