Life & Work with Lizea Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizea Harper.

Hi Lizea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Minnesota. I always believed that I inherited my artistic nature from my grandmother who is a very talented painter. I started acting at a young age, and my love for the arts continued to grow. I pursued a number of other interests, sports, and academics, but I was always drawn back to performing. When I was a teenager, I was in a bad car accident. My family and I were struck by an under the influence driver. I sustained life-threatening injuries, and had to have multiple surgeries, including a spinal fusion. I spent years in and out of the hospital recovering. For a long time, anything art related was the furthest thing from my mind. As I grew stronger, writing and poetry became an amazing outlet for healing. Years later, a friend helped me discover I could turn my poetry into song lyrics. It was from there that I stumbled into creating music.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Medical issues and challenges in my home life gave me a new perspective. I gained more empathy for those that might also be going through adversities. I went to school for Political Science and International Relations with a focus on Human Rights Law. I am passionate about advocating for others. Throughout helping myself and others, music has been an amazing healing outlet.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter. I just released a new video for my single “Space Between”. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to open for international artists and have my music featured on Jersey Shore, Double Shot at Love, and an upcoming Hulu Series. I started out my music career as a spoken word artist, which transitioned into hip-hop/rap. It wasn’t until later on that I actually started singing. Most of my new music is primarily pop and singing heavy, but I still rap and carry a unique flow and cadence that other pop singers don’t.
