Life & Work with Malcom Potek of Northeast Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcom Potek.

Hi Malcom, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Biography

My work began some 28 years ago in the spirit of self-determination. At an early age I was purposeful to be passionate about the work I did in the world. Inspired by the rebelliousness of punk rock’s will to power and Gandhi’s advice to be the change you want to see in the world, I ventured to create beauty.

Fast forward to 1999. With our first child turning 1, my wife and I moved to Northeast Minneapolis. Housing prices were fair and we found space to grow our art business out of our garage. In the subsequent years we would grow out of that tiny garage into available warehouse space, and finally, a building we co-own with another artist couple. My wife continues to work as a painter, illustrator and Minneapolis Public School teacher.

In addition to running a small business in stained glass repair and supply, my work has centered around creating valued artwork in public settings and private commissions.

My shop has a mission to educate those with a taste for making things. We teach stained glass, kiln formed glass and torchwork. I currently teach both locally and nationally.

As an artist I strive to reveal the value in the work of Art. To make visible the inner struggle of the mind to create an idea, and the body to construct a form.

Malcom Potek lives in Northeast Minneapolis.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is smooth and mine is no different. Artistic chalenges I enjoy are to create authentic and honest artworks that allow for nuance in a world of loudness.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mostly I am a kiln formed glass artist. Of course all my projects are a part of me and represent a time and moment that I am proud of. The only thing that sets me apart from anyone else is the hubris that drives ego. I think what I make and help create is ultimately beautiful.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love collaboration. Whether that is a client that is a client thats asks for artwork without input, or clients with very specific desires. Each pose an interesting set of circumstances that influence how a piece is made. Alot of our original work in the shop comes from working with designers, architects and buildiers, as well as individuals. It all starts with a desire to see something beautiful in the world and a phone call. (usually an email).
