Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Munn.
Hi Matt, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a creative person, but I really got serious about learning how to draw around age 15. I was really into comic books at the time and played role playing games with my friends. So I’d end up drawing their characters for them. I was also into computers as a child. And in the 1980’s not everyone grew up with home computers. Well I would draw things pixel by pixel in these ancient art programs. Fast forward to modern times, I primarily draw digitally now. I also dabble in clay sculpture and 3D sculpting. I’m always doing something creative, my home decor is also an art project of sorts. Each room has a different theme. Atomic 50’s living room, Pirate captain tv room, Tiki bar basement and a ton of other mid century decor. I’m an introvert and like spending time at home, so I like my living space to feel like an escape of sorts.
Currently I take commission work when I have time between my day job and other artistic projects. Currently I’m slowly creating a tarot card set based on a fantasy horror web comic that I created back In 2006. I also just recently started doing mid century styled caricatures that people seem to enjoy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Art isn’t a smooth road to take. That’s why I have a day job. People often don’t understand how long it takes to make a custom piece of art and don’t want to pay a fair wage, and with the introduction of AI generated images, a lot of possible clients just use ai instead. Which is really messed up,
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My art is generally a pen and ink, comic book styled art. Digitally drawn and colored. I’m known for drawing zombies, monsters and mid century styled caricatures. I don’t really pay much attention to what others are creating, I just make what I’m inspired to make. I’m most proud of doing a drawing for a young kid who was fighting cancer. It was of him and his two best friends as heroes helping him fight a monster. It really lifted his spirits. He is now thankfully cancer free!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Art is therapy for me. Whenever life gets too busy and I haven’t made anything in awhile, I’ll start feeling depressed, I might not realize it at first but as soon as I start drawing again, my depression slips away. For me, art is a way for me to leave something of myself behind after I’m gone. If I’m just grinding my gears through life and not creating, I feel like I’m lot living up to my potential. It’s just who I am.
