Life & Work with Mycah Bain of minneapolis, minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mycah Bain

Hi Mycah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began when I purchased my first camera before spending a summer studying and living in the Middle East in 2010. That camera became my constant companion as I documented my experiences abroad, and my passion for photography continued to grow when I lived in Uganda that fall.

What started as a creative outlet and way to capture my travels has evolved into a thriving Minneapolis-based photography brand that has now spanned over 14 years. I’ve built a talented team of photographers who work alongside me, allowing us to serve more clients and expand our offerings.

I’ve been fortunate to develop several specialized areas within my business: wedding photography (where we’ve captured everything from sunset ceremonies in Santa Barbara to traditional multi-cultural weddings around the world), senior portraits (focusing on creating empowering and magical experiences for high school seniors), and brand and business photography for a diverse range of clients.

Throughout this journey, I’ve maintained a commitment to making my clients feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated in front of the camera. Whether it’s a couple on their wedding day, a high school senior capturing this milestone, or a business owner elevating their brand, my approach remains consistent: create a joyful experience that results in beautiful, meaningful images that become treasured art.

Today, my team and I serve clients worldwide, and I’m grateful every day that I get to create work that not only feeds my creative soul but also sustains a life I truly cherish.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any entrepreneurial path, my journey has certainly had its share of challenges. Building a photography business from the ground up required perseverance and adaptability.

In the early years, I faced the classic struggle of establishing myself in a competitive industry. There was the constant balancing act of investing in quality equipment while also being financially responsible. I remember times when I questioned if I could truly make photography a sustainable career.

Learning to value my work appropriately was another significant hurdle. As many creative entrepreneurs experience, I initially underpriced my services, not fully accounting for the time, expertise, and post-production work that goes into creating quality photographs. Finding the confidence to charge rates that reflected the true value of my work took time.

Building a team brought new challenges too. Transitioning from a solo photographer to a business owner with multiple photographers required developing systems, consistent training processes, and maintaining quality control across all client experiences.

There were also moments of creative burnout that I had to navigate. Finding ways to stay inspired and continue growing artistically while managing the business side has been an ongoing balance to maintain.

But these challenges have ultimately strengthened both my business and my passion for photography. Each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, authentic communication with clients, and staying true to my vision while remaining flexible enough to evolve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating authentic, emotion-filled photography experiences across several distinct areas. My work spans wedding photography, senior portraits, brand/business photography, and empowering portrait sessions.
For weddings, my team and I focus on capturing the genuine connection between couples. We’ve documented sunset ceremonies in Santa Barbara, elopements on Lake Superior, vow readings in Glacier National Park, and cultural celebrations around the world. Our approach emphasizes not just beautiful imagery but also a supportive, stress-free experience throughout the entire wedding day.
In the senior portrait realm, I’ve developed a reputation for creating sessions that go beyond standard photos to become empowering experiences. I guide seniors through location selection, outfit choices, and natural posing techniques that help them feel confident and celebrated during this milestone moment.
For businesses and brands, I create visual storytelling that captures the essence of what makes each business unique. From professional headshots to product photography and event coverage, my work helps businesses build authentic connections with their audience through compelling imagery.
What sets my work apart is the emphasis on creating a transformative experience for clients. I focus on building genuine connections that allow people to feel comfortable in front of my camera. This approach results in photographs that reflect authentic emotions and personalities rather than stiff, posed images.
I’m most proud of the emotional responses my work generates. When a client tells me they finally saw their own beauty through my photographs, or when I receive messages years later about how meaningful these images have become as family heirlooms, that’s when I feel I’ve truly succeeded.
The consistent five-star reviews across my services reflect what clients value most: the ability to put people at ease, create a genuinely fun experience, and deliver photographs that capture not just how people look, but how they feel in their most meaningful moments.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
While many people know me for my photography, they might be surprised to learn how deeply committed I am to wellness and personal growth. I’m passionate about a holistic approach to well-being that includes regular sauna sessions, cold plunges, therapy, and staying active through hiking and other activities.
These practices aren’t just about physical health—they’re integral to my spiritual journey and ongoing personal development. I’ve found that investing in self-care creates the mental clarity and emotional resilience that directly feeds into my creativity as an artist and my effectiveness as a business owner.
My wellness routines provide balance to the creative intensity and business demands of running a photography studio. Whether I’m breathing through the heat of a sauna session or challenging myself on a hiking trail, these moments of mindfulness help me process ideas, solve problems, and stay grounded.
I believe the quality of my work is directly connected to my personal growth. By continuously evolving as a person—physically, mentally, and spiritually—I bring fresh perspectives and authentic energy to my photography and client relationships. This commitment to wholeness behind the scenes is perhaps the invisible foundation that supports everything visible in my brand and work.
