Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Kaz.
Hi Paul, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a local family that has been in business since 1967. Our parents, Ted and Diane Kavajecz, started out owning and operating a small barber and beauty shop business in McGregor, MN and then got an opportunity to purchase the local motel and restaurant in town and they pursued that. This was when they were 28 and 26 years old. That went well and they progressively moved to various other businesses in the region, but primarily within the hotel business that currently exists like the Canal Park Lodge and Canal Park Brewing Company. The six siblings, along with many relatives, have worked in various roles for the company through the years. We like serving people and helping them along in their day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always challenges which can lead to opportunities, if kept in the right perspective and managed well. Since 1967, we have made it through wars, inflation, deflation, financial bubbles, fires, a pandemic, to name a few things. Adapting to the current situation by thinking on your feet helps get through such circumstances. We aim to address things head on and while not sweating the small stuff. The statement, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it” has merit.
Being in business for the long haul is a result of sticking with the basic principles of business, treating people right; and there is no replacement for hard work and sheer determination.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to owning hair salons and hotel/restaurants, the family has owned and operated a fishing resort in Canada, a couple of movie theaters, a cattle ranch, a farming operation, a bulk fuel oil business, and a gas/service station, to name a few, and our father worked in the iron ore mines for his first 10 years out of high school.
Making other people feel welcome is very gratifying and is the core of the hospitality business.
Having great people to work with and loyal guests make it all worthwhile.
