Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Valentine.
Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
How it all started, I grew up playing basketball and other sports. Basketball was the sport I excelled at. It was a love I had never felt before. I was a big stand-out player in high school and later became that in college. After college, I decided to take my talent professionally and played 7yrs overseas. A places like England, Norway, Sweden, German, China, and many other places. Basketball had taken my life everywhere and put me in a position to change lives. After retiring from playing, I decided to help the game and give back to the youth and other players. I am currently a Professional trainer I would with a prep school LA Premier Prep, and I also am an owner of a basketball facility. Last but not least, I have an AAU team that has been dominating that basketball youth world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
The basketball journey is a wicked road filled with bumps, ups and downs, and many smiles. The road I took is less traveled. I played ball against the grain and always had my mindset and agenda. That caused me to have issues with my coaches; moving forward to the pro world, I never had an agent, which made getting a job and keeping a job extremely hard. Now the ups and downs of coaching and training, on the one hand, you get a lot of joy and love for helping. On the other hand, they can take advantage of you in a big way. All in all, I wouldn’t trade the journey for anyone else’s
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Valentine Elite Basketball is a breakdown of compassion, family, and love. We build players from the ground up. My goal is to change the face of basketball here in Chatsworth, CA. I am a basketball mentor. I work with all levels of basketball, including the beginning stage of learning the game. What I do for my players is give them a safe place to express their deepest fears. A space to feel completely comfortable with being vulnerable, and for many young men and women, that’s hard to find. I was known for being a very strong and emotional player in basketball. I am athletic, and my shooting ability is extremely high in the training game. I have known for being the guy that is always there and always there for my players. I give them my all. I specialize in basketball detail and breakdown. Basketball is perceived in different ways by different people. Being brought up in a harsh environment allowed me to learn from many great individuals. Shooting and handles would be the two things I have a special talent for teaching. I am proud of my career, the players I have helped become all-Americans, and the players I have built up. I am proud that I’m a father and will give the game to my child. The last thing I am proud of is my young bull Ryder Reily. Seeing him grow and build into a successful young man and lead his school in academics has been a source of love and energy. What sets me apart from most people is that I am a very, very explosive person about basketball. It’s my passion, and it exudes in me. I’m a 24 hr guy. I’m always in the gym and always working on the next thing. Also, I don’t turn players away; I help everyone get to where they want to be, and I do it with no intention of receiving anything in return. I give what the game gave me: love, hate, happiness, tough love, and, last but not least, family.
Had we love to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would be when I was 14 playing 16u. I went to Vegas to play in the big-time tournament, which was a star-studded event. And we matched up against a team from Philly, and Allen Iverson’s nephew played for that team. After beating that team and having a really good game, Allen Iverson came up to me and told me I had a game and that I looked like him too. As a child, that was the moment I knew I would be in basketball for the rest of my life.
