Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocio Bermudez.
Hi Rocio, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Guatemala, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in architecture and began my career more than 20 years ago. I worked on hundreds of residential, commercial, and industrial projects, which gave me a deep understanding of how design and construction come together.
When I moved to the U.S., I realized that my architectural degree couldn’t be directly validated here, and while that was a challenge, it also became an opportunity. With over 15 years of experience already behind me, I decided to pursue my general contractor license and bring a more feminine and detail-oriented perspective to the construction industry.
That’s how Bravo Construction Services started. My goal was to make remodeling feel more approachable and personal, especially for women homeowners who often feel unheard by traditional contractors. I wanted to create a space where clients could feel comfortable expressing their ideas, knowing they would be understood and supported, and where every project reflects their vision down to the smallest detail.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s true for most entrepreneurs. Starting a business in a new country, in a male-dominated field, came with its challenges. At the beginning, I had to prove myself constantly, not only because I was new to the market, but also because I was a woman with an accent working in construction.
It was also a challenge to earn the respect of my crew, who are mostly male and immigrants like me but come from cultures where it’s not common for a woman to be the one giving direction. It took time, patience, and consistency to build that trust and mutual respect, but today we’ve created a great team dynamic where everyone values professionalism and quality above everything else.
Building trust took time, but over the years, clients began to appreciate my attention to detail and the way I listen and communicate. Those same challenges that once made things harder ended up shaping how I run Bravo Construction today with transparency, care, and professionalism.
There were also practical struggles, like learning all the codes, permits, and business regulations here in Minnesota, which are very different from what I was used to. But every challenge taught me something valuable and pushed me to grow. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and of the relationships I’ve built along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Bravo Construction, I focus on residential remodeling, bathrooms, kitchens, basements, decks, and complete home updates. I work closely with homeowners from the first idea to the final details, making sure the process feels organized and enjoyable rather than stressful.
What I think I’m most known for is my eye for design and the care I put into communication. Because of my background in architecture, I naturally think about proportion, function, and balance, not just finishes or colors. Clients appreciate that I can visualize their project from both a designer’s and a builder’s perspective, which helps prevent surprises and keeps everything cohesive.
I’m most proud of how many homeowners, especially women, have told me they felt truly heard and comfortable working with me. Construction can feel intimidating, and I love being able to bring a calm, respectful, and detail-oriented approach that makes people feel understood.
What sets Bravo apart is that personal connection. Every project is a collaboration, and my team and I take the time to understand not only what the client wants but why they want it. That makes the end result more meaningful, it’s not just a new space, it’s a reflection of who they are.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are going on road trips with my parents. I’m the youngest of four, and my siblings are 8, 10, and 12 years older than me, so I basically grew up surrounded by adults. My mom didn’t like leaving me at home with my older siblings while she worked in sales, so she often took me along on her trips. We’d spend hours driving, talking, and playing games in the car to keep me entertained, and those are some of my happiest memories.
I also loved Christmas time because my mom made all kinds of handmade ornaments, and I was always part of the process. I think that’s where my love for color, creativity, and detail really began. My favorite gifts were always markers and puzzles, my mom used to joke that I was the cheapest kid to buy gifts for because all I needed to be happy was something to draw or build.
