Life & Work with Sarah Mattson of Saint Paul, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mattson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
there’s many reason as to why i became a hairstylist, one of them being, i grew up in a town where there weren’t many people who looked like me, and everytime id get my hair done id never feel fully satisfied or beautiful. i was always told my hairs to much, or was always offered other services to make it easier on them, or id always leave with my hair wet. so with that being said, i wanted to be that artist that was there for any type of hair/ walk of life, and never wanted my clients to feel what i had to go through. academics had never been my thing, but i was always a visual creative person, always doing everyone’s hair and makeup before going out, and always loved just being around people. i took the leap and went to beauty school and now here i am 5 years later, loving every second of it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
has the road been smooth you ask? hahaha nothing worth having is ever smooth. fresh out of school i worked corporate as a hairstylist at ulta beauty and quickly moved up ranks within months , thankful for all they had provided for me, but the corporate realm had killed my creativity over the years, to the point where i almost quit hair all together, burnout in our industry is real. as is any creative or service provider. . i decided to take the leap and become independent, tiffany wheelhouse graciously offered me a position at meraki , fell in love with the space and the other creatives there as well and i’ve been there ever since. i definitely had my doubts along the way if i had made the right choice for me, but i look back it all and it was the best position i could’ve done for my self creatively.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
i am a lived in hair stylist, i take clients from high impact blondes, or previously colored hair, virgin, and bring them back to their natural state, and color corrections , i love a good challenge, so ultimately that means i like taking the natural beauty you’ve come in as is, so i take your skin tone, eyes, hair color you have, i ask about your day to day life, your routine and take all that into consideration , and enhance what you already have. i care A LOt about my clients hair integrity and hair health and them as a whole. everyday is a blessing, i truly am blessed with the best clients ever. i am a very natural, lived in person my self and low maintenance. i dont see my job as a job, i see it as i get to surround my self with beautiful women and get to make them feel beautiful.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
i grew up in a very structured christian conservative home, i was born and raised in stillwater! i come from a family of 6, and i was also adopted as well. i was a student athlete my whole life gymnastics and track , i grew up in a family that’s very minnesotan you could say, so that means the lake life whole lot of outdoors , a lot of time with family, downhill and cross country skiing, iceskating, fishing , hikes. i am a super outgoing, talkative, hands on learner, so this is the perfect field for me
