Hi Sheryl, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the world of extensive travel truly began in 2014 with the purchase of a Hilton Grand Vacations timeshare. This investment sparked a curiosity that led me to uncover the intricacies of travel hacking, mastering techniques for maximizing credit card rewards, airline miles, and hotel loyalty programs. My pursuit of the 50 States Challenge also highlighted the strategic use of Amtrak as a valuable travel tool. I have two states left, Vermont and West Virginia. However, it was a shout-out by my Pastor during service that I realized, I was inadvertently gatekeeping valuable travel knowledge. This prompted the birth of LSKTravelz shortly before the pandemic. While the world paused, I focused on building my online presence and honing my writing skills, formalizing this through an online travel writing course at Kirkwood Community College. This led to my first professional assignment with Conde Nast Traveler, where I shared insights on the Platinum American Express Card. My expertise with Hilton further developed into a role as a Hilton Grand Vacations Explorer in 2023, allowing me to document experiences at HGV Max properties and the strategic use of Hilton Honors points. Even after my explorer term, I was honored to cover the 2025 HGV Tournament of Champions. Wherever my travels take me, I make it a point to shop local. Through LSKTravelz, I now offer specialized travel boot camps, including Travel Basics 101, The Platinum American Express, and The Dirty “T” Word-Timeshare, aiming to demystify travel for others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Maintaining LSKTravelz has presented a mix of encouraging moments and ongoing realities. While initial expectations for website monetization and traction haven’t fully materialized, I remain committed to providing valuable travel information and resources. The hope is that continued content creation will resonate with readers and organically lead to increased engagement, including through Amazon Affiliate links. Interestingly, supplemental income streams like my participation as an Amazon Shopper Panelist and in travel-related survey programs contribute to offsetting website costs. A significant highlight was the unexpected virality of two Facebook posts last year, which provided a notable boost in earnings. Ultimately, my primary goal is to generate enough revenue to sustainably maintain the LSKTravelz website as a valuable resource for fellow travelers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Beginning my career as a Biology Teacher in the fourth-largest school district in the United States, I transitioned to the role of Professional School Counselor, allowing me to support students in a broader capacity. This long-term commitment has created meaningful connections, exemplified by a former Biology student who has become a valued Assistant Principal colleague. As a National Board School Counselor (NBPTS), a recognition achieved by a select group of educators (7,306 in Illinois), I am now privileged to guide and mentor other Counselors pursuing this prestigious certification.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
With the resurgence of travel across all modes – air, rail, and road – I anticipate a significant increase in engagement. While many travelers focus on flight-related rewards, it’s crucial to consider the benefits of gas station loyalty programs for those driving. Similarly, Amtrak offers a valuable rewards program for train journeys. Savvy travelers can also leverage partnerships like the one between Marriott Bonvoy and Starbucks, allowing for the accumulation of both hotel points and complimentary beverages by linking accounts. Technology is increasingly impacting the travel industry, with some states already using mobile apps for passport display at airport security.
