Life & Work with Sheryl Tegtmeier of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Tegtmeier.

Hi Sheryl, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In August 2015, I turned a lifelong dream into reality by opening Stony Hill Gifts & Home Decor. After spending most of my adult life in the retail home décor industry, I wanted to create a store filled with unique, affordable gifts and home décor that would help people celebrate life’s special moments. As my daughter left for college and my husband and I became empty nesters, I found myself at a career crossroads. With my families encouragement and much prayer, the opportunity to open my own store began to fall into place.

Today, Stony Hill Gifts & Home Decor is more than just a gift shop—it’s a place where every item tells a story and every customer is welcomed like family. My team and I are passionate about creating a warm, small-town shopping experience where heartfelt conversations, thoughtful displays, and exceptional customer service make every visit special. Many of our customers tell us they walked in as strangers but left feeling like friends, and being known as their “gift guru” is one of my greatest joys.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a small business has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most small business owners, I’ve faced challenges that tested my faith, determination, and resilience. From navigating changes in the retail industry and economic uncertainty to managing inventory, rising costs, and the day-to-day responsibilities of running a business, there have been many moments that required difficult decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic was especially challenging, forcing us to find new ways to serve our customers while keeping everyone safe.

Through every obstacle, I have leaned on my faith, the support of my family, my incredible staff, and our loyal customers. Each challenge has made me a stronger business owner and reinforced why I started Stony Hill Gifts & Home Decor in the first place—to create a welcoming place where people feel at home. Looking back, I’m grateful for every hurdle because each one has helped shape the business we are today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Stony Hill Gifts & Home Decor, we specialize in helping people find meaningful gifts and beautiful home décor that are both unique and affordable. What I’m most proud of isn’t just the products we offer—it’s the relationships we’ve built over the years. Our customers know they can count on us for honest recommendations, thoughtful gift ideas, and exceptional customer service. What truly sets Stony Hill apart is the experience. From the moment you walk through our doors, you’re greeted like family. We strive to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where shopping feels personal, conversations are genuine, and every display is thoughtfully designed to spark joy and inspiration. Creating that sense of connection and community is what makes me the proudest, and it’s what continues to make Stony Hill Gifts & Home Decor a special place in Rogers.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer is to never stop learning and never be afraid to ask questions. I believe there is wisdom to be gained from everyone you meet, whether they’re a fellow business owner, a customer, or someone who has years of experience in your industry. I’ve been fortunate to build relationships with other small business owners who have generously shared their knowledge, encouragement, and ideas along the way.

Networking, for me, has always been about building genuine relationships rather than simply exchanging business cards. Getting involved in the community, supporting other local businesses, participating in local events, and being active in community organizations have helped me connect with people who truly want to see one another succeed. My advice is to be authentic, be willing to give as much as you receive, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Those meaningful relationships often become your greatest source of support, encouragement, and inspiration.
