Life & Work with Sophia Gold of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Gold.

Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a really sensitive child, and would see spirits and have intense dreams, “know” things – but I didn’t understand it. I didn’t have much guidance in this realm. I was raised in an evangelical church, which allowed for a certain amount of spiritual connection, but there still were not answers for me there. I ran from my gifts for many years. In my mid-twenties, my father died and I was reeling from that and PTSD from personal trauma. I decided at that point I wanted to find healing and answers. I started with yoga, meditation, acupuncture and discovered float tanks, reiki, psychic work. I found SO much healing through these modalities, and my gifts opened up like a flood. To be honest, the intensity, power, and palpability of it intimidated me. Who was I to be channeling these things, knowing the things I knew, speaking directly to spirits and offering guidance? I immersed myself in this world, read books and found mentors. I started doing readings and reiki for others around 10 years ago. It was amazing to connect with others in that fashion, and provide them some of the healing I had found through it. I wavered off and on with it over the years, raising three children on my own brought me back to very practical pursuits. Finally, being burnt out from working in places not aligned for me, my intuition, some wonderful mentors, and spiritual support led me right back to this work. I remembered how deeply and truly I enjoy, love, and feel called to this work. I believe that happens for a reason – I learned so much about life through all of the work and life experiences I have had, and its given me a very broad worldview to connect with all types of people and what they are working on inside of themselves. Today I am happy and blessed to be running my own business full time doing what I love. It is a different thing to work for yourself, and a lot of practicalities come into play, I am constantly learning!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I carried a lot of my own fear – of putting myself into the world, people thinking I am crazy (me at times wondering if I am crazy). Wondering how much I am capable of carrying on my own. I have faced judgement and ostracization in certain areas of my life that also made me afraid to be more open. That in particular made me step back for awhile, though it also led me to digging deep into myself to clarify my beliefs, truths, values, and mission. Owning your own business today is also not simply opening up a door and people showing up, it involves marketing, advertising, bookkeeping, navigating relationships, balancing life/family/relationships, and everything in between. As I slowly opened up my business, I learned to design a website, materials for online promotion, materials for print, work scheduling apps, do taxes and the legal aspects, use social media and become a content creator to an extent (which I was very resistant to but have come to really enjoy it, it’s a great way to connect broadly with people all over the world). Two things that were tough in opening my own business – one was not having co-workers or others to bounce ideas off of or figure things out together. I really love to work with others (my co-workers have been my favorite part of every job I’ve had!) and there is a loneliness in that at times. (Decision fatigue is very real!) Though it also brought me to meeting others in my industry, and in adjacent industries, and now I have a wonderful informal support team. The other thing is building your own infrastructure and boundaries – there is no manager or owner or HR or higher ups to direct difficult people to and YOU have to decide all of your own hours and create your own schedule. I have open office hours, though all of the background work is the part no one else sees and all that goes into it can be incredibly time consuming. Balancing your schedule and taking time to yourself along with everything else going on in life is definitely a learning curve. Intentionally taking time where I do not check or respond to messages or do work for my business is a key component for me to stay healthy. The plus side of both of these things – you get to choose your circle! And you get to decide your hours and time, which is wonderful for my home life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offer psychic readings, intuitive reiki, chakra alignment, Akashic records readings, past life readings and healings, mediumship, and intuition development and education.

I approach spirituality from a grounded standpoint and like to connect all of the dots between the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental fields. I am known for holding deep space for others to be able to feel truly seen, to release their emotions in a safe space where there is no judgement or shame. I am not afraid of the dark, and very few topics are off limits.

I have a lot of life experience with grief, trauma, parenting sensitive children, being a sensitive person, single parenthood as well as relationships. I am a reiki master teacher, have my 200 hour yoga teacher trainings, some education in social work, years of personal practice in support groups, spirituality, inner child healing, and many modalities in between.

I am continuously learning, studying, and working on myself. I didn’t get a certificate or degree and then say okay, that’s it, I’m done, let’s go – I continue to learn, meet with mentors, read, attend my own support groups and therapy weekly and am constantly learning. I will never say that I have all of the answers – this work is all about a connection between people and developing trust that allows us to work together and discover answers together. I research, do my own studies, practice everything myself, and consult trusted mentors and peers in my personal life first and foremost.

Consent and developing trust are key components of my work. I will not read energy without explicit permission, nor will I ever claim to be all knowing. I have found that in many communities there is a sense of competition at times, or people will feel they have to be “loyal” to one practitioner. I encourage people to try other practitioners and other modalities. Just like a therapist, or massage therapist, or yoga teacher, or tattoo artist, there are going to be some you click with, some you don’t, and sometimes many you click with, which is awesome! Once again, it is all about connection and community for me.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have been very blessed to have a life full of wonderful people and mentors, that being said I also sought them out and developed those connections. It is a relationship and will take effort, time and committment to nourish it. For me, finding a great therapist I can talk everything out with a big piece. I also attend Al-Anon and ACA (support groups for friends and families of alcoholics/addicts and dysfuntional families) – there are so many wonderful people in these groups and I find it important to be continuously working on having healthy communication and boundaries, which these groups have taught me so much about.

Find someone you admire that has shared values. Ask them if they have time/space/willingness to meet for coffee or take a walk or even a phone call. They may not be in the same industry or position in life as you, but finding someone you can bounce ideas off of or come to when you are having a tough time is important. I intentionally choose to connect with people that I respect and who have clear communication. I know people from all walks of life who excel at different things to turn to for advice. Diversity is important to me as well, I never want to exist in a vacuum and lose sight of a bigger picture, so I ensure that I connect with lots of different types of people – from age to gender to career to social economic status to race and religion.

Attend events that you enjoy! I met one of my first mentors through a yoga class many years ago, and we are still connected. I love to take a walk or grab lunch with someone to get to know them better, and then ask them if they have time/space/capacity/desire to work together and what that looks like. My time is precious and I get along very well with others who respect my time and their own as well.

Partnering with other businesses to put on events, going to local classes, and connecting through social media are all great ways to find people. Intentionally creating time in your schedule for these relationships is important. I do not do well as an island (nor do I think most anyone does!) and recognizing the value these relationships possess is key to developing them well.
