Life & Work with Theodore Kidd of Minneapolis, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theodore Kidd.

Hi Theodore , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved to draw but I really started consistently drawing when I was in middle school. I was very inspired to recreate a lot of the media I was a fan of as a kid like Anime and Pokemon. That led me to exploring different mediums that I wasn’t as familiar with at the time like alcohol markers. When I started taking art classes in high school, I had teachers who really pushed me to explore my own personal experiences and emotions in my work while exploring different styles and mediums. I’m forever grateful for that since I’m a bit of a creature of habit. Doing so many art classes in my k-12 schooling career led me to pursuing art school, which is what brought me from the East Coast to Minneapolis, and I think that was one of the best things I could have done for myself. I went to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and while I was there, I really fell in love with comic art. I have loved to write since I was in high school and combining my love of visual art and story telling just felt so natural. I’m currently focusing on learning more about tattooing and pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say I’ve had some ups and downs in my career, but who hasn’t? I think one of my biggest struggles is finding my own confidence in my work. I tend put more weight on other people’s thoughts and opinions when I should really try to let them go. It’s something I’m currently working towards getting better at and I think it’s a very real and relatable struggle for other folks. I think it’s very easy to be hard on yourself and myself as well as many other creatives should be kinder to ourselves. We will always be our own worst critic but those critiques shouldn’t rule our creativity.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in comic art and illustrations. I work in a variety of mediums but I have a soft spot for digital artwork, alcohol markers, and acrylics. My comics tend to focus on stories that deal with emotional turmoil and coming of age moments mixed with the supernatural. Often times I’m using these stories to work out my own feelings on things I’ve experienced in life. I find werewolves and selkies to be very compelling creatures in folklore and I really enjoy using them in my stories. My illustrations tend to focus on animals and blending them with my love of patterns and line work. I find doing illustrations to be very meditative and to be a nice break from all the thinking I put into comics. I find wolves and sharks to be some of my biggest inspirations when it comes to animals but I love all animals if I’m being honest.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Folks are always welcome to follow me on social media and reach out to me there! I’m a pretty open and friendly guy and I’m pretty happy to collaborate and meet new folks!
