Life & Work with Tyler Edward of Mankato

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Edward

Tyler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved telling stories through video – since I was young, I would make video skits with my brother. I didn’t discover my love for filmmaking until the last couple of years when I began at Bethany Lutheran College for Media Arts, specifically on the track of film. I’ve now made multiple award-winning short films and just recently finished my most ambitious film yet, “Mina”.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being an artist is not always easy, and I would say a “struggle” of mine are Influences- sometimes there are influences in your life that can be very burdensome; Comparing your skills to others, questioning whether your work is well done, straying away from relying on stories that have already been created, etc. I attempt to tell stories that are for myself and I try not to constrain myself based off of what others think.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work primarily in film and documentary. I spend my time and creative skills developing new projects for school, for clients, and myself. I am known mainly for my short films, primarily my most recent one, “Mina.” I’m proud of how much collaboration I’ve been able to put into all my films as well as using my filmmaking knowledge to think outside the box.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
On top of filmmaking, I am also very big into music. I’m a drummer, and I used to sing in choir. I like to get in touch with my musical side when I get the chance and I love rocking out on the drums.
