Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Maravelas.
Hi Will, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started recording in my hometown of LaCrosse WI at Actual sound studio at an early age. When I moved to Minneapolis, I began working with Bimanic Studios before opening 14:59 Studios in 2010. We are in our third and best location and have 100s of recordings under the belt of this studio alone at this point. I have worked with local bands recording their first demo to professional internationally known touring recording artists and everything in between.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything in a creative world can be challenging. Music is no exception. Of course, you have the egos and opinions (mine included) but the ever changing landscape is in constant shift with the technology. What artists and musicians expected 10 years is very different to what they expect today. Honestly the process hasn’t changed, be prepared, play well and do your best, but technology can fix everything these days, which has made the process easier but sometimes also made us as artists lazier. We need to remember that the goal is to be proficient with your instrument and songs, and get tight together with the other musicians you play with it. I have seen some of the most talented musicians not play well in a band situation and some of the most simple musicians create music that will make your hair stand up. It’s all about playing to the level you are capable of and I capture to tape* albeit digital these days.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the recording studio, 14:59 Studios is “known” for doing heavy stuff; punk rock, rock and roll, heavy metal, thrash, death metal, etc. However, we have done country, hip hop, electronic, background soundscapes and even recorded audiobooks. The bottom line is we are working studio designed to help working creatives. We may specialize in the noisy rock and roll, but we can get clean and detailed with a project as well. I don’t want to limit what we can do at 14:59 Studios.
I have worked with several prominent artists in the heavier sub-genres. I also endorse Tone Vault Audio cabling and PRS Guitars.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I truly wish the resources existed when I was learning how to do this that exist today. There is not a better education than listening to music you enjoy AND familiarizing yourself with music that is outside your comfort realm. Buy CDS, buy Vinyl, buy a painting, please support artists! We need them! Without art, life would be so dull.
As far as other resources youtube is full of great tutorials, lessons and recording series. I follow Spectrum Audio Group regularly and also love Nail the Mix education series. If you want to grow your clientele go to shows or go to art events (safely with Covid of course). You would be shocked how much conversation just goes towards the creation of the art.
