Meet Abby Ginder of Wanna Be Madrileña

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Ginder

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began learning Spanish about 15 years ago as it was a requirement in elementary, high school, and college. For many years, I absolutely hated the language because I did not understand a single thing and as the years went by, I fell further behind. However, that all changed during my sophomore year of high school. I had a Spanish teacher who pulled me aside and retaught previous concepts. From there, I feel in love with the language. Fast forward years later, I lived in Spain, completed a master’s degree in Spanish, founded a tutoring company, work as a Spanish Professor, and will be starting a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics program this Fall 2025.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Regarding my Spanish learning journey, it has been anything but smooth. When first starting out, I struggled with grammatical concepts. Now, the difficulties I experience are related to identifying characteristics of different Spanish dialects. I believe there will always be struggles related to learning a language. However, the type of struggle one experiences will change throughout his/her language learning journey.

Regarding founding a tutoring company, I have encountered a few struggles here and there, such as promoting courses, juggling running a business with other responsibilities, and managing finances. However, reaching out to individuals who have gone through the same struggles has provided me with the tools necessary to continue moving forward and making improvements.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a person who has studied Spanish for many years, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to learn a language. That is why I created Wanna Be Madrileña. I want to help others learn Spanish whether it be for a class, travel, work, or simply for fun.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Passion! For me, if I don’t have a passion for what I’m doing, I will not stick with it long-term.
