Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Bloom.
Hi Abigail, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Creativity has always been a part of my identity. Drawing with crayons and finger paints as a child became knock-off Copic markers and iPad drawings as an early teen, which then evolved into studying graphic design and other forms of digital art as a high school and college student. Of all the art forms I have explored throughout my life, photography has always been near and dear to my heart.
My first pictures were taken with my dad’s Sony camera. The controls were large and awkward in my 5-year-old hands – but I felt such a thrill at the idea of being able to capture both the fine details of a flower’s petals to the large sweeping landscapes seen from a mountain- all with one device!
A couple of years later, my parents bought me my first camera. I took it almost everywhere with me, and it documented the small moments (my dog sleepily sunbathing) to the big ones (swimming in the ocean for the first time). Fast forward to today- I am now doing freelance photography and loving it! I specialize in creative, portrait, and small business photography. I love creating and capturing moments that are tailored to each client.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe any new creative can relate to feeling nervous when starting their own business. For me, marketing myself and becoming the face of a brand wasn’t something I had ever done before. Although I learned the basics of it in college, putting that information into practice was a completely different experience!
As someone who tends to be more on the shy side, going out and presenting myself to people (both in person and via social media) didn’t come naturally. However, working through that learning curve ended up being crucial for me. It helped me gain more confidence in my skills and abilities, which, in turn, had a positive impact on the way I run my business.
So, representing my brand was something I had struggled with a lot initially.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My specific style aims to focus on three things: Color, Contrast, and Framing. By honing in on these aspects, I provide high-quality images that feel fresh and bold! I feel that my education and background in design have given me the tools to achieve this.
I love building out an aesthetic and creating a lively color story throughout. However, black and white photography is something else I specialize in and I feel like I have become a bit known for that haha! I’ll be honest, when I was younger I didn’t understand it at all- why would you want a photo with no color?
Since then, I’ve developed an appreciation for the beauty of it. The finer details stand out more- and despite there not being a color, you can create unique and contrasting values that are high impact. I love it so much that my Instagram grid covers are entirely black and white!
What do you think about happiness?
Seeing bold colors and editorial styles brings me a lot of joy. Modern art and styles influence a lot of what I do! Recently, I was able to visit my bucket list museum- the Museum of Modern Art in New York!
It opened my eyes to all the unique ways that I can take my artistic influences and implement them into my work. And, of course, it makes me happy being able to deliver custom photos for my clientele that feel authentically them!
