Meet Amanda Wang-Erickson of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Wang-Erickson

Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was going through a rocky period in my life, feeling kind of lost and stuck. Every time I felt anxious or depressed, I would turn to art — drawing, painting and playing piano initially — which always brought me a sense of calm. Then, my best friends gifted me some air-dry clay, and I dove right in. That’s how I started working with clay! While I now primarily use polymer clay, I still remember the magical feeling of bringing my first sketch to life in clay form.

I began making more clay creations, initially gifting them to friends as gifts. My first big step was participating in the Art in the Hollow market in 2023. That’s where Awe & Wonder was born. Since then, I’ve continued to create and experiment with different techniques and ideas, which has made me feel more grounded. Knowing that my creations sit in people’s homes and bring them joy is incredibly rewarding.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. I would love for this to be a steady income, but it is unpredictable. It was hard to find a routine after leaving a 9-5 job, and it is challenging to balance making art, my freelance design work, spending time with loved ones, caring for my family and my pups, and my new vegetable and herb garden!

Despite these challenges, I feel incredibly lucky. This is the first time I have experienced a journey that, although not smooth, is something I still want to pursue. I genuinely love what I do even when it gets difficult. And I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to create something positive and uplifting for those who come across my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make accessories out of polymer clay in small batches. Since they are handmade, no two are exactly the same. Many of them feature cute faces on them, and I also like recreating my favorite Asian treats! I also make prints and stickers mostly to capture warmth and coziness, and a good dose of puns! I love puns! Additionally, I love working on commissions because I get to learn more about my customers and bring their visions to life.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I create pieces that make me laugh, smile, or feel a tug on my heart. I hope they bring the same joy to others, or bring a sense of wonder. I believe that filling your space with things that cheer you up goes a long way in the world we live in.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Follow your curiosity and get to know yourself. Exploring what helps me feel better and what I’m naturally drawn to led me to discover new art styles and mediums, and creating art that resonates with people.

This journey has also taught me to work better by understanding my internal cues when I need a break, and to think about building the life I want. While I haven’t mastered this myself, I practice it by regularly checking in with myself.
