Today we’d like to introduce you to Anni Xo.
Hi anni, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a musical theater/choir kid growing up and didn’t start writing my own music until I was in college. I always knew I wanted to write songs and play with a band but something about living in the suburbs in Minnesota made that feel like it could never be a possibility. Once I went to college & eventually moved to the city, I realized how many people had just gone for it – wrote some songs, found some friends, and just started playing music. I came out around this same time and the songs started to flow for me – writing about being queer & falling in love with a woman was incredibly healing and was the catalyst for my debut EP “Allergic to Dogs”. Once we had the whole EP recorded, Hunter SinClair Hawthorne (keys & production) and I found a group of talented musicians and friends to join the band. Riley Jacobson (electric guitar) joined first – he had recorded bass on the EP, so it was a no-brainer to ask him to join (though his role in the band eventually shifted over to electric guitar). Next was Maddie Thies (bass), an absolute icon in the local scene here in Minneapolis, who has not only held down the low end in our band but has also played a crucial in the band’s growth. Last but absolutely not least, Aurelio Sandoval Pogatshnik (drums) joined the band in the summer of 2024 and has been an amazing addition to our sound. I’m not really sure what point we’re at today, but what matters is I am making music with my best friends & we are having so much fun & playing rooms we never could have dreamed of playing even one year ago.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways, yes. I am super grateful for how the scene has received my band & our music & I am really excited to see where the next few years take us.
