Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubree Herrick.
Hi Aubree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with photography starts about 6 months before I ever purchased my first DSLR camera. In October of 2018, I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. I underwent surgery to remove the tumor followed by 6 rounds of chemotherapy over the course of 18 weeks. During my recovery from surgery, I spent a lot of time on Instagram as a way to distract myself. I found so many photographers posting absolutely gorgeous photos from along the North Shore of Lake Superior and all around the midwest. Looking through those posts gave me a way to escape my current reality and inspired me to dream about all of the beautiful adventures I would take when I was done with treatment.
In April of 2019, I bought myself my first DSLR camera as a “you made it through chemo” gift and set out trying to learn all about this new hobby. After a LOT of trial and error and mentoring from some of my favorite MN photographers, I was able to learn the basics of photography and how to use my camera to capture the world around me in a visually pleasing way. In the years since the purchase of my first camera I started my business: arh photography, was chosen to take part in my first gallery show, developed and designed a new website, have been contracted by businesses to take photos of their products, and, most importantly, traveled to many of the places I dreamed about during chemotherapy,
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d love to say my journey has been without bumps but there have been plenty along the way. The first bump happened about a month after buying my camera. I was tearing my hair out trying to decipher the different settings and how to adjust those settings to produce the best result. I was ready to put my camera away and quit. Thankfully, one of my mentors offered to meet up with me, teach me the basics, and coach me through the process. This is the day that changed the course of my photography journey forever. After that meeting, I felt so much more confident in my ability to continue learning and growing as a photographer. Even now, three years later, I have continued to grow and learn new skills and techniques to improve my photography while still staying true to the artist that I am.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hobby photographer who dabbles in all areas of photography. From macro photography to portraits to vast landscapes, I have tried it all. My favorite photos to take are ones that capture the small details that make each location, product, or client unique. I like to think that my determination to capture these details is what sets me apart from other photographers.
I am most proud of the confidence I have gained throughout this journey so far. I will always have more to learn, but my confidence in my work and my vision has grown more than I ever thought possible.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m not sure what role luck has played in my life overall, but I do know that I am lucky to be surrounded by so many supportive family and friends. Without their support, none of what I have accomplished would have been possible.
