Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Thavis.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
Once upon a time, in a magical land called Saint Paul, there grew a girl who dreamed of never growing up. Flash-forward some 20-odd years later, and the dream became a reality. Becca Thavis, who has a K-12 teaching license in theater, a master’s in education, and a K-12 license in ASD, was teaching at the Children’s Theater when a co-worker suggested she apply to become a princess (she was covered in glitter practically all the time anyway). Becca toured the US, doing balls, events, make-a-wish foundation visits, and photoshoots. But when her glass slippers got too tight, she hung them up and put on her queen crown to open her own princess company. Magical Moments was founded in 2018, on June 18. This is her mother’s birthday, and the company was dedicated to her (Juliann) for making Becca’s dreams come true. Magical Moments was founded to be an unparalleled company of creativity, equality, safety for all – and of course, making magical moments. Her team is filled with the most giving, talented, and creative humans she has ever met. When they’re not changing lives as teachers, awing audiences with their voices, or saying lives as nurses, they perform in parades, private events, balls, events, tea parties, and more!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To say the pandemic put a pin in princess plans is an understatement. In 2020, livelihoods shut down, and suddenly the windows and doors were closed to the castle. Inspired by her online teaching, Becca created a free online activity time for princesses to perform (almost daily)! This was a great success- and some people even asked to donate! All proceeds went directly to the performers since some had been furloughed or laid off due to the pandemic. Finally, in 2022, Magical Moments is bouncing back, with new fairytale friends, big events (like with the St. Paul Saints!), and even more energy than before.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of the people that surround me. Not only am I gifted their time, talent, dedication, and magic, but they trust me to lead them. I never take this lightly, and I constantly learn from the prince and princesses who have become my best friends. I am also in awe of the children I meet- I am frequently surprised by the light, joy, and kindness in their hearts. In our events, we often make wishes, and so many children wish for other people or their families before they even think of themselves. Recently, at an event, a little girl was asked to make a wish, and she looked wide-eyed at the princesses and said, “but all my dreams came true!” and then ran to her mother, hugged her, and said,,, she could make her wish.
What characteristic of yours would you give the most credit if you had to?
Glitter. So much glitter. I named Magical Moments because I was excited to make moments of pure magic, and I am so thankful that I have and can continue to do so. But really, I think there needs to be an endless drive to honestly want to make magic—to capture the joy and share it with everyone.
