Today we’d like to introduce you to Blix and Bess.
Hi Blix and Bess, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are Blix (they/them) and Bess (She/Her) and we have been together for a little over 4 years and have been traveling full-time on the road for over 1 year. We moved into our van officially in December 2020. The pandemic really pushed us towards this way of life. We were living in the Bay Area (California) and paying a ridiculous amount in rent. We wanted a change so Blix was actually looking into tiny homes. That’s when Bess revisited her old love and fondness for living on the road. The #vanlife bug bit us both and we began searching to buy a van around late summer/early fall of 2020. We found the perfect tiny home on wheels in November 2020 any December we had moved into your 60 square foot home and started traveling full-time. In one year we have traveled to twelve states and have been documenting our experience on YouTube and Instagram.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest challenge has been learning how to navigate such a tiny space and have it be our full-time home. Life on the road is very unpredictable and it requires us to have our heads on a swivel. Particularly as a queer couple and interracial couple, we’ve had to really focus on making sure our safety is at the forefront. For the most part, we’ve been able to have only positive experiences, however, it’s never lost on us that we live makes us even more vulnerable. Additionally, learning to find the balance between working and traveling full-time has been an ongoing challenge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Blix works remotely in Tech Sales and Bess works as a content creator and editor of our YouTube Channel. (Bess recently got a job working in CX for extra income).
What’s next?
We just bought a house in Minneapolis which was not a part of the immediate plan, however, it has been exactly what we needed. After a year on the road, it became very clear to us that having a home base would make traveling in our van more sustainable in the long run. We hope to visit all 50 states and even take our home on wheels to Europe where van travel is very popular as well.
