Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyne Naomi.
Hi Carolyne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing my own songs at age 9, joined the teen’s choir at 12, picked up the guitar during my undergrad program, became a contestant on a music reality TV show (MTN Project Fame West Africa Season 1) and continued to pursue my music career in Nigeria where I was born and raised. I moved to the US in 2014 and attended McNally Smith College of Music in St Paul, where I studied Guitar and Voice Performance. Moving to Minnesota was a whole new experience for me musically, so I attended and performed at open mic events, and networked with musicians and artists. I eventually released my first single in 2018, titled, “Love and Light”, and I have since released more singles and music videos, and performed at top music venues in the Twin Cities like Skyway Theater, Dakota Jazz Club, Cedar Cultural Center, etc.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Adapting to a new environment was a major struggle. Coming from a very warm country, Minnesota’s winters are hard to get used to. I also had to begin my career afresh by connecting with local artists and working on different music projects with them. I had to build a new fan base here and that has been great so far.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I got my master’s degree in media and communication, and I have worked within this field ranging from music jingle writing and recording for corporate organizations, web and social media management to administration and email marketing.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is something we do even when we’re not aware of it. Moving to another country was a risk for me. Starting my music career afresh was a risk. Falling in love several times have all been a risk, lol! Sometimes the outcome isn’t what we expect and sometimes it is. But we never know for sure until we try. So I believe that it is important to live a life that’s free of the bondage of fear of the unknown, and to take steps of faith toward our future.
