Today we’d like to introduce you to Casarah Baker.
Hi Casarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started out not knowing anything about makeup whatsoever. One day I was told to master the art of makeup. So I sat up for hours until 3 am watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. Over time I started getting really good at doing makeup. A few ladies from the strip club were like my canvases for practice so I would charge $25 for a full face of makeup.
Over the years I started becoming even better and started gaining clientele from locals to doing weddings and then eventually got my first big break with celebs. After a time of doing makeup, I started a YouTube channel then I had this voice saying Casarah start a makeup business of some sort.
I was very hesitant on doing so due to being a single mom and having the funds to even start a business. As of April 7, 2022, I registered my business called Plush By Casarah B. Which is an eyelash and lipgloss business and will eventually become more than that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a rough road I will say but by the grace of God, I was able to overcome those obstacles. I just recently had a launch party and things were not going the way I wanted them to go. From almost not being able to receive my product to sell at my launch party.
From the thank you bags being too small to put the lashes and lipgloss in, to having to switch DJs and finding backup, not getting any grants. Also, they say you can start your business with little to no money that’s not true. I was working OT hours to have money to put toward the business. It’s a struggle especially to have things the way you want them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My career job is as an optical lab technician and optician. I have been in the optical field for 15 years and working with some of the best doctors in the twin cities. I take pride in being in this field just having to know and learn how the eye works. Helping others see has been an amazing experience.
I think people are shocked at what I do as a career job versus what I love to do which is makeup and starting up my own new business. People are intrigued when they hear that I’m an optical lab tech and optician they think I should be on tv or some think I’m famous but I’m not. Just a regular girl from St. Paul, lol.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was always into some form of art. I use to draw and also went to an art school that was located on Summit Ave. Around 8 years old I started dancing with a drill team by the name of Half Pintz which has won every Rondo Days drill team competition in St. Paul.
I danced for Half Pintz for about maybe 20 years and then we had an older dance group by the name of Immortal which I started dancing with in my 20s. Dance was my passion. I always wanted to be in the videos showing off my talent. I got a few opportunities but didn’t pursue them as I got older.
