Meet Corbyn Young of Minneapolis, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corbyn Young

Hi Corbyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first fell in love with photography back in high school, during my time in IB Art and Yearbook. Capturing school events and working on creative projects in art class was so much fun, and it sparked something in me. In college, I dove deeper into both digital and darkroom film photography, which challenged me in ways I never expected. It was through these courses, along with an internship in the college’s marketing office, that I really began to picture photography as a full-time career.

To build my portfolio, I started by photographing friends and family, and in 2022, I joined the school and family photography team at Slow Road Photo. It’s here that I honed my skills, gained confidence, and found a community of inspiring, like-minded creatives. This group has been a constant source of support, advice, and inspiration as I continue to grow a photography business of my own. Their belief in collaboration and shared growth reminds me daily that “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

After experimenting with various genres, I found my passion moving toward family and wedding photography. What I love about both is being able to be creative while capturing the raw, beautiful connections between people. Family and wedding photography, to me, is timeless. It’s all about preserving those fleeting moments of love, joy, and connection.

In addition to family and wedding photography, I also enjoy capturing senior portraits, events, concerts, and branding photos. I love mixing things up and stepping outside of my main focus because it keeps my creative spark alive and adds variety to my work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is there really such a thing as a smooth road? Personally, I think if everything were easy and effortless, it would be boring! It’s the challenges and obstacles that push us to learn, grow, and discover new ways to create. My journey has definitely had its share of smooth and bumpy moments, and because it hasn’t been perfectly smooth, I’ve been able to stretch my creativity and confidence in ways I never imagined. While some aspects have come easier, starting my own photography business has of course had its tough moments. The slow seasons are challenging, and imposter syndrome tends to creep in, but I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a supportive community who are always there to help and offer guidance when I need it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Minneapolis family and wedding photographer. My photography style is genuine and candid, with gentle guidance and direction. While capturing images I take an honest and relaxed approach focusing on the perfectly imperfect candid moments. My editing style is true to color with a touch of warmth to achieve a timeless, yet authentic look.

For me, the most rewarding part of being a family and wedding photographer is the chance to capture and preserve moments that reflect the true emotions and unique stories of my families and couples. Through the images I create, I am able to bring a little more joy and love into their lives, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful to me. Knowing that I’ve created something that holds such emotional value and is something they’ll look back on with love and nostalgia, is what fuels my passion and makes me truly proud of the work I do.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I graduated from college in 2020, and like many others, my senior year was abruptly shifted online due to the pandemic. I was in the middle of a digital photography class that I loved, and it became difficult to stay inspired and creative while isolated at home. I missed the community and connections that I had built on campus. Mentally, it was tough, but looking back, I realize that this period of isolation pushed me to think differently and develop new creative strategies.

After graduation, like many, I struggled to find a job that truly resonated with me. I missed photographing people and events on campus, and I realized I could channel that passion into something of my own. This led me to create Freckled & Framed Photography, and since then, it’s been such a fun journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
