Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Meyer
Hi Crystal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Crystal and I am 23 years old, married to my husband (Hunter), a mom of a 6 month old girl and the owner/ founder of Crystal Whitening. Crystal Whitening is a luxury professional teeth whitening business that is located in Excelsior Minnesota.
As a child, I was very creative and always wanted to have my own business. I would sketch out business plans and day dream about all of the fun things that I could create. I have always been a creative & a day dreamer. I believe that my mind and my creativity is my super power.
In 2019, I graduated from high school with almost having my associates degree in business. I attended college courses (PSEO) that counted as high school & college credits. Once I graduated from high school, I made the decision to switch my career path to early childhood education. I attended more college courses and eventually started a job as a preschool teacher. I loved being a teacher, but there were some downfalls of doing it during the COVID-19 pandemic. It started out being so rewarding, but eventually I started noticing that my mental health was being affected from my job. I started dating Hunter while I was teaching and he had made the decision to move to Texas during that time. I came to the decision that I also needed a change in my life to help my mental health.
I decided to quit my teaching job and move to Texas.
I moved in with Hunter and started a sales position at the company that he was employed with. I quickly decided that sales was not right for me, so I got a nanny job. After a few months of being a nanny, we decided to move from Dallas to Fort Worth. The commute to my nanny job was difficult, so I decided to find something new. I came across a teeth whitening position online that required no experience. I decided that it would be a fun new thing to learn. The company payed for all of my training & certification. I quickly fell in love with the job and never wanted to leave.
Then came summer of 2023- Hunter and I were getting married in August. Our wedding was planned to be in Minnesota and we were still living in Texas at the time. We felt so overwhelmed with planning a wedding from across the country, so we decided it was time to move back home. Things soon got chaotic, but SO good!
We moved home late June and as I was searching for a teeth whitening position, I soon realized that there were not many teeth whitening companies in Minnesota. The most common place to get your teeth whitened would be dental whitening and I was not a dentist. I then talked with my husband and decided to take a leap of faith and open my own business. June 10th, 2023- I opened Crystal Whitening. I started out renting a salon suite room. I could whiten 2 clients teeth at a time, so I had two chairs crammed into this small salon suite. I started out decently busy, but then I started realizing that I needed to advertise more. I started this business with no business loan, so I didn’t have the funding to pay for much advertising. I went to social media for all of my advertising. I created all of my posts, reached out to content creators to share my business and soon I started to get busier. Shortly after our wedding day, I found out that I was pregnant and due April 27th, 2024. My business was doing pretty good, but I needed to hire someone quickly, so that I could afford to take time off for maternity leave. In June, I hired and trained my sister to work for me. She quit her job and jumped at the chance to help with my business. I trained her and got her certified for the position and she took over doing the teeth whitening while I stayed home with my new daughter. In July of 2024, I found a new open space in Excelsior, Minnesota. I decided that I could rent out this new, larger space, add 6 whitening chairs and I could go back to work with my Sister. We moved to the space, I found a family friend to watch my daughter during the day time and I got back to work.
We are located at 244 Water Street, unit 200, Excelsior, MN 55331. We love our new space and I keep pushing to grow each day. I have found many struggles with owning a business, but each struggle has lead me to more accomplishments.
We are currently the highest rated teeth whitening business (on google) in the state of Minnesota.
I strive to provide a comfortable, easy, and affordable teeth whitening experience for my clients. We don’t use any harsh chemicals, the appointment takes 90 minutes, it costs $180.00 and the results are instant. Clients typically come back about every 3-6 months to maintain the results. (The results last different lengths of time for everyone, it depends on daily habits)
This job feels so rewarding because I get to see clients leave with a smile on their face.
The best part of my business is hearing how I have changed someone’s confidence. I once had a gentleman come in that was in his late 50’s- he told me that he had never felt confident in his teeth because he smoked for years and it made his teeth look very dark. After he finished his whitening appointment with me, I held up the mirror for him to look at his teeth and I noticed a tear go down his face. He thanked me many times for brightening his smile. Moments like that have made me feel so blessed to have such a great business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road, but I always try to focus on the positives. I have had many months that my husband has paid for all of our bills- due to me not making enough from my business. I have struggled with having some weeks with a full schedule of clients and some weeks that I have no clients. Owning a business has taught me to always have back up money available because anything can happen. I struggle with having multiple job roles, since I own a business. I do all of my own marketing, I created my own logo, I created my website, I do all of the social media, I do the organizing and cleaning in my business. There’s a whole list of jobs that come with being a business owner and it especially gets hard when I need to separate work life from home life. I am usually working from 9am-7pm and then I have a 45 minute drive home to New Prague. I have decided that once I am home, I have to enjoy time with my husband and daughter and leave my works worries and duties at work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We offer professional teeth whitening in a luxurious studio. Our goal is to provide a comfortable, luxury experience that feels relaxing. The appointment takes 90 minutes. It is broken up into (3) 20 minute teeth whitening sessions & then (1) 10 minute vitamin booster treatment at the end. We have clients rinse between and drink water, stand up or use the restroom. After the appointment is complete, we show you how many shades brighter that your teeth got. (We use a shade guide to compare the start to the finish). Clients can get up to 14 shades brighter right after the appointment is done!
Our teeth whitening gel is a food-grade peroxide based gel that includes clean, organic ingredients that help keep your teeth strong! (No harsh chemicals). The process will not damage your enamel. Each whitening session- the gel will be applied to your teeth and you will lay under our special LED teeth whitening lamps that will activate the whitening gel. This process will help open up your pores in your teeth to do a deep teeth whitening.
After the (3) 20 minute whitening sessions, we jump into the vitamin booster treatment. The vitamin booster gel is full of organic vitamins & minerals that help strengthen and remineralize your teeth and hydrate your teeth and gums!
Since we don’t use harsh chemicals, most clients experience little to no sensitivity. (We inform our clients to drink at least 100oz of water within 24 hours of the appointment time because sensitive teeth are usually due to dehydration)
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my family. I have always been a very nurturing person and I want to have many kids. I want my kids to never have to worry about being taken care of. My husband is a very hard worker and I know that he will do anything to provide for our family, but I want him to feel like he doesn’t have to take on all of that responsibility. As I am running my business, he is working long hours (doing HVAC and farming for his family’s business) and helping to care for our daughter and I just want him to get a chance to not worry about the stress of working and providing. I know it will take many years and hard work, but I want to expand my business and eventually have more freedom to be with my family. I want my daughter and other future kids to see me as a strong woman that is able to help provide for our family. My husband will eventually be taking over his family’s farm (they farm soy beans, corn and they have pigs) and farmers do not make much money. My husband is a very kind man that has very good values- he is a third generation farmer and will work the farm for free if he needs to. He understands and believes in the good of farming and I will forever cherish him for that. He could care less about money because he understands that farming is providing food for many people.
