Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Overhouse.
Hi Dylan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I got started in media after being inspired by the stories photographers could tell through images created while touring with musicians and also the unique way that music videos could connect with the audience. This led me to pursue a degree in visual communications and immediately find work as an event photographer and videographer.
Over the next several years, I used these opportunities working to continue developing my skills and awareness and began creating some of the same types of content that inspired me in the beginning. Along the way, my dreams and vision have continued to grow and evolve.
It has been and I’m sure always will be a bumpy road. I believe I am my biggest critic, and I get in my own way a lot, but it also helps to always be pushing myself to go a little bit further.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a filmmaker and photojournalist, known for photographing events such as festivals and concerts. In 2021, my photographs documenting local protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death awarded me inclusion in the La Crosse Arts Board’s “The Moment” exhibit. It is empowering to have my work preserved as something more meaningful.
The newly renovated La Crosse Civic Center also features a 2-story replication of my images of the Mississippi River and surrounding bluffs which is still pretty wild to see.
What sets me apart from others is my relentless ambition. Almost every day, I get out of bed and push myself to just go do things, capture moments, and create. Sometimes it feels meaningless, and some of the time, this work leads to much greater things.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
I have always had a hard time explaining how I see the world, so being able to effectively communicate through my work matters to me a lot.
