Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Shackelford.
Hi Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my dessert business after discovering a passion for cooking and baking! I would say that baking and designing desserts are my creative outlet. I loved working with different themes, colors, designs, and products while pregnant with my daughter 2 years ago. I started having a major sweet tooth. I would find myself coming up with recipes and making these fancy desserts. From there on, it’s pretty much been an obsession of mine. So I said, why not make it a business. Something I enjoy doing, but also something that I truly feel can bring real joy to others also.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
Starting A Taste of Ebony has had some challenges, but none I haven’t been able to overcome. I have a full-time job in the corporate world, but my number one full-time job is being a mother. That job doesn’t stop, no matter if I have 5 orders or 20 orders. The organization has been a huge help in my success. I plan everything. I have to ensure that I have my work schedule, soccer games, family time, date nights, etc. You name it! It has to be in my planner or on my calendar for me to stay organized. I would also like to mention that my daughter Emilia is my driving force. She pushes me to stay committed and to strive for success in everything I do. I want her to look up to her mom, be proud, and know that she can be a successful woman in today’s world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Taste of Ebony?
I specialize in handcrafted custom treats. I am mostly known for taking an idea that you may have and bringing it to life. I also offer bundles ranging 4-7 dozen. What sets me apart from other bakers is my designing process and the many menu items I offer. I can satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth and even the fur babies! I offer vegan, gluten, and sugar-free items as well. One of the main reasons I decided to offer vegan and gluten-free options was my health issues. Due to my severe dairy allergy, I had to go vegan for a while. I found that most stores don’t carry many options for vegans, so I started creating my things in my kitchen! It was important for me to be able to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. I wanted to recognize everyone’s beliefs and diets. Let’s not forget you can also share a treat with your furry friends! The menu item I have recently added is cakes. I can do numbers, letters, sheet cakes, etc.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am located in Belle Plaine, MN. I love the small town feel and environment. Everyone is always so friendly and so personable. I wouldn’t say I dislike this, but the distance from the inner city if I had to choose something. That can shy people away from ordering, but I also remind them I offer delivery services.
