Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Nsumba.
Hi Edgar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Uganda, East Africa. My childhood was marked by both hardship and love. My mother left when I was very young, and I was raised by my father until I was 13 years old. Life was difficult. My father worked tirelessly to provide for me, but our family lived in extreme poverty. There were days when I went without food—not because my father lacked the desire to care for me, but because circumstances beyond his control often stood in the way.
Despite our struggles, my father was the most hardworking, caring, and selfless person I have ever known. We had very little materially, but he filled my life with something far more valuable: love, hope, and encouragement. Through his example, he taught me what it means to be a compassionate and devoted parent. Although we were poor in possessions, I felt rich in the love he gave me.
When my father passed away at the age of 13, my world changed forever. The loss was devastating, and it marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with uncertainty and challenges.
Twenty-one years ago, I moved to the United States in pursuit of a better future. Looking back, I know that education was the key that transformed my life. Without it, I would not be where I am today. Even in the midst of poverty, my father instilled in me two values that continue to guide me every day: the importance of education and the power of hard work.
Those lessons inspired me to found Pillar International in 2023. The organization’s mission is simple but powerful: to provide educational support to underprivileged children in East Africa.
I firmly believe that education is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. By investing in children’s education, we create opportunities that can transform not only their lives but also the future of their families and communities. Education empowers children with knowledge, skills, confidence, and hope—tools that can never be taken away from them.
There is a saying: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” That philosophy is at the heart of Pillar International. Our goal is not simply to provide temporary assistance but to create lasting change through education. When a child receives an education, doors open that once seemed impossible to reach, creating opportunities that can impact generations to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building Pillar International has been a journey of persistence, learning, and faith. When I started the organization, I had no experience building websites, running a nonprofit, or managing an organization. Instead of hiring a web designer, I taught myself how to build our website so that every dollar saved could go toward supporting the children we serve.
Unlike for-profit businesses that can market products and services, nonprofits rely on something far more personal—trust. Donors must believe in the mission and the impact their contributions can make. Earning that trust is not always easy, but what has kept me moving forward is my unwavering belief in our mission and the difference education can make in a child’s life.
Through every challenge, my faith in God and the values my father instilled in me have remained my source of strength. As long as I have the opportunity to serve, I will continue working to create lasting change. We are making a difference—one child at a time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of my work with Pillar International, I am a Senior Business Systems Analyst with extensive experience leading business and technology initiatives across complex organizations. I specialize in bridging the gap between business stakeholders and technical teams, translating business needs into effective technology solutions that improve processes, increase efficiency, and deliver measurable results.
Throughout my career, I have led cross-functional projects, facilitated requirements gathering, analyzed business processes, and supported the successful implementation of enterprise systems. I am passionate about solving problems, driving continuous improvement, and helping organizations achieve their strategic goals through thoughtful analysis and collaboration.
My professional journey has been built on the same values that guide my nonprofit work—hard work, integrity, continuous learning, and a commitment to creating meaningful impact.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
No journey like this is accomplished alone. My wife has been one of Pillar International’s greatest supporters from the very beginning. She challenges me to think differently, asks the tough questions that strengthen our decisions, and provides unwavering encouragement when the road gets difficult.
Her belief in me, our mission, along with her willingness to challenge ideas and push for excellence, has helped shape Pillar International into what it is today. Through every obstacle and every success, she has been a trusted partner, sounding board, and source of strength. I am deeply grateful for her support, wisdom, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the children we serve.
